I think I can one-up this. When we moved into our new house last spring I was still experimenting with leaving my daughter's dog (18 mo at the time) loose at night and when we weren't home. I had also left some still packed boxes in the kitchen where I had gated her in. She got into a box if my things I hadn't taken upstairs to the bedroom yet. What were the damages? Two pairs of gorgeous high heeled boots and four handbags.
We went back to crating her for a few more months.

LOL, Kelly! Yeah, depending on the dog, I usually go with somewhere around 2 years.

OH Sun,
what a huge bummer. Your pup is soooo cute though. Abbie had a couple incidents like that when she was young. Her cuteness is all that kept her from the grave...LOL.
I hope you feel better soon Pharaoh.
Good luck to you both on your move.

if puppies weren't so cute, they wouldn't survive!

Teena's breeder was bragging to me that she has been leaving her litter brother out of his crate at night for quite some time now.
Today she confessed to me he'd destroyed two pairs of dress shoes, her eyeglasses and other items too numerous to mentiion!
So far, Teena has chewed up several pairs of eyeglasses (cheap magnifier specs) my roomie's Bible, the skirt on an upholstered armchair, the coffee table (hey, I got it at a used furniture store for $35) and too many flyers, newspapers and catalogues to mention. She also put paid to the rug in the den when she ripped the binding off one edge while I was at church two Sundays ago. That rug is about 30 years old, has raised two puppies, and been pooped, peed and vomited on more times than I care to think about. I was already trying to decide whether to clean it one more time or just take it to the dump. Teena swayed the vote in favour of the dump. When I finally removed it from the den, there must have been several pounds of dirt lying underneath it! I can just imagine how much must be still trapped inside the fibers!
I've replaced it with an indoor-outdoor carpet that I can just take outside and hose down when it gets too dirty. I'd go with bare floors, but the hardwood floor underneath would be scratched up in no time, and my old boy gets really bad calluses on his elbows if he doesn't have something soft to lie on.

When I was first married, I was eager to finally have a dog since I had always wanted one growing up. We got an 8 week old husky/shepherd mix that was the cutest little fuzzball I had ever seen. Anna loved Kleenex - if there was a box of tissues anywhere she could reach she would pull out every single tissue and shred them all over the house. She climbed on the table, got them off the kitchen counters and even ripped open new boxes just to shred the tissues. It was my introduction to what I call "management problems" - dogs are going to do stuff if they're bored and it's the human's job to keep them tired/occupied/contained if you don't want it to happen. It was also practice for keeping small children out of all of the things that they try to get into. I may not win all the battles, but I think I'm winning the war. At least that's what they let me think!
