if you ever see a photo of a baby in which instead of "redeye" flash you see this, make sure that baby is seen immediately by a doctor.  His or her life might be at stake:

My GSDs have all variations of eye shine, from yellish to green to blue, depending on what angle they look back at me.  But my schnoodle who has basical black eyes will shine only yellow. The GSDs do have pretty much the same brown eye color.

Thanks, everyone! REALLY fascinating topic, IMO and you are all making some great observations and contributions! Thanks, so much! Now.. if there is no tapedum lucidum at the back of some eyes, then where is the reflection coming from, and why red? I know that blood cells and capillaries are not reflective.. or are they? SOMETHING is throwing light back at the viewer when red eye shine is seen.. but, what?

Mickey D.. There is a place about 150 miles from here where a government contractor used to do a lot of testing, involving radioactive materials and radiation. It is alleged that the incidence of cancer is very high in that immediate area. I think six children right in that immediate vicinity have retinoblastoma. It is still to this day a rural area, so six children would be a very high number, if true. Unfortunately I cannot confirm, but I have a good friend who was living up there and was involved in a lawsuit against the corporation involved.

If your dog doesn't have an eyeshine, instead it looks dull or like a pearl inside the eye--check for cataracts. It's how I first became aware of a cataract in my Jack Russell--he was only 2 at the time.

DDR Red eyeshine, either with or without TL, occurs when pigment is missing allowing the colour of blood capillaries to show through.  What I don't know is if pigment can still be present in the retina  when the TL is missing.  I don't think pigment is ever present in the retina/TL if it is missing in the iris (blue eye).  Young puppies tend to have red eyeshine as pigment cell migration continues well after birth.  IIRC pups up to ~6months retain red eyeshine, so pssibly taking much longer to inhabit the retina than the iris.

Interesting Q about reflectivity without TL.  I looked it up and found the answer on Wiki.  It seems the fundus itself has reflectivity.

Because the light of the flash occurs too fast for the pupil to close, much of the very bright light from the flash passes into the eye through the pupil, reflects off the fundus at the back of the eyeball and out through the pupil.

DDR I hope that this has to do with K-9 blindness, for a while there
I thought you were losing it. And I like you.
Goverment contractors, sound like FBI, CIA, or the Vatican.
Take care of yourself old friend. No one is going to hurt you.
By the way I am a big conspiracy fan I read allot of that stuff.
One of the best I have ever heard was Prof.Vaith. A noble prize
winner in agricalture. Go eBay for his stuff, it is cheaper. Because I think his DVD sets,
are like $200 if you buy them off his website.  If you start getting really weird you will have get some medication,
which is ok nothing wrong with that. I think everybody has been looking at
each other with some suspicion lately.

DDR-DSH,the green "eyeshine" in one of my female's eyes was in fact a Lens Coloboma.
My usual vet couldn't see what I was talking about,it took a specialist to pinpoint the problem.

I don't have a German Shepherd but I was looking up eye shine color because my dogs is a vibrant blue and I was trying to find out if that is related to a specific breed...
