I am glad the owners have kept their male and hopefully they will take good care of him.
You must really like German shepherds to take them in as you do.
You are getting overwhelmed so why are you taking out of state dogs too?
from your posting, this female is aggressive more out of FEAR than dominance. ( untrusting and backs away)
She will most likely take to you given the time, but she will go through the same thing with a new family
unless you are able to take her and socialize her constantly with alot of people and animals. she is 6 years old and has most likely done this for many years now. hard to bring her out of that, sad to say. We all must choose our battles and make choices, you choose to help unwanted german shepherds, please don't get yourself so overwhelmed that you just burn out on it all together. Whether we want to or not, we all have to make decisions on WHAT is best for the animal. Home to home, constant fear of something, a life of misery or a quiet Euthanasia to end that suffering. The dog was sold to those folks as a puppy and delivered to them by the Breeder, They did not pay shipping on the puppy to them, they did NOT pay $1500.00 for this female. They may have for the male and female together and they paid shipping on the male as he was purchased separately. ( Yes I did some checking). Working around and with animals for many years, I finally had to realize it is often times more humane to Euthanize than putting an animal through more and more misery....
If you burn yourself out on these types of animals, you lose out helping alot of others.
I am not trying to offend you, so please don't take it that way.
Yes I do blame some breeders for not taking care of the problems they produce, but it certainly isn't all breeders fault by any means. In this case I truly feel it is the Owners fault with the way they did this female and leaving it to someone else to take care of a problem THEY produced.
wish you the best.

Email me from the website.... WWW.MONTANAGSDRESCUE.ORG
K9 cadet...the female Kera's former owners are now living in Montana and did not produce this dog, the breeder did...yes they did buy the dog separately, the dogs are different ages.....the breeder told me she shipped the dog to them when they lived in Colorado. They now live in Montana about 4 hours from me...they told me they paid $1500 for her.
Yes I mentioned she is fearful not aggressive...they told me she was too aggressive, with their kids' friends, I told them she is has fearful aggression from not being socialized, believe me I layed into the former owners for not socializing them...
I know I can get her over this eventually, I am able to "fix" 99% of the dogs brought to me...I am just so frustrated by all the breeders constantly putting out puppies to people and then not following up on them. I constantly contact the owners that adopt from me to find out how everything is going, have my own forum where they can write and give them my phone number should they have any problem...I am in contact with my adopters on a regular basis...and I have adopted out about 160+ dogs in the past 2 years.... I believe that is a larger number than most breeders sell puppies??? If I am able to keep in contact with my people to find out how they are doing and if they have any socialization or obedience issues...why can't the breeders do the same???? Maybe then they would know what has happened to their dogs...
OR DON'T THEY REALLY CARE....???
PRODUCE, SELL AND FORGET ABOUT THEM????
GOOD QUESTION FOR ANOTHER TOPIC..!!!!

Steph,
I visited your website, it is really good. I love the way you have photos and good info on the dogs.
That definitely helps those looking for a dog. It assures more personality matches, that is great...
I think some on there are absolutely beautiful animals. sure hope the right home comes along for them.
I know some breeders couldn't care less about the pups once sold. Others Do care and do try to keep in contact.
Often times the buyer doesn't make contact back with the breeder. :(
I will pass on your website to others.

What would you do with this 6 yr old bitch?
Someone on here has contact with Kathy at Valiantdale...please maybe you can get something done about this female...
I have called and emailed her, she thought maybe someone would take her, but I can't now get a response if she got ahold of that person. I know she is busy with 2 more litters on the ground or almost on the ground per her website info,
BUT!!!! She won't answer me back now!!!
I am going to have to charge board for the dog, I will have to pay to get her spayed. I can't adopt her out with the frightened temperment she has. I don't feel it is worth my time working with this dog so the breeder can rehome her. I have enough dogs to fix of my own rescues...I was trying to do them a favor...former owner and breeder...
do I go ahead and Put Her Down???
The answer as to why I take dogs in from other states is, per K9Cadet's question;
And the reason I am taking GSD's from out of state, this one came from Montana where I live...I take neighboring states dogs in because all the rescues are full and when I can I try to help out other rescue groups also...
And no I don't take offense, we all have our opinions....and thanks for the kudos on the website...

Do you think she's by nature fearful, or is this just the result of lack of socialization?
Yeah, I'm still thinking about her, and feeling sorry for her.

I feel for you and the dog. I volunteer for two GSD rescues and a couple all breed rescues right now. Almost every dog we get in is heartworm positive. It sucks. You can't save them all and that's the worst thing. Worse than dealing with the idiot owners, the crap they do to the dogs, knowingly and unknowingly. I've had a few excellent breeders take dogs back when I contacted them. Some breeders won't so much as give me the time of day.
I don't deal presonally with the sick, injured, untrained "normal dogs". I get the question mark dogs, the "problem children". Always the question, is this dog adoptable. Can I put this dog in a home safely, where it won't bite anybody or kill another dog. Can I turn this dog loose with the average joe blow, wife and 2.5 kids on the street and have it be safe and have any kind of quality life. Sometimes it's yes, sometimes it's no, most of the time its maybe, but only if we can find the "right" home.
I got a call a couple months ago about an owner surrender IPO2 Mal to a kill shelter. His crime? He got sick and tired of a little dog harrassing him and finally bit back. The Mal is living happily on a farm in Tennessee now. Damn nice dog too.
Last week I went and evaluated a shy, fearful dog. It had been in a foster home for three months and wasn't much better than the day she was pulled from the shelter. She ran and cowered in the corner shivering when I walked in the door. It's no life for those dogs. I advised she be PTS. I hate it, but it's the best thing for the dog.
Three days ago I had an unpredictable aggressive GSD to go see. I'll be making a recomendation on that one too. Is it adoptable? Does the dog have a problem or is the owner the problem? Can we work with this dog or not? Do we have the resources, money, experienced foster home, time, trainers, etc. to work with this dog? For how long? Weeks, months? How many easily adpotable dogs will die in a shelter when there's no foster room available because the tough ones have been there for months? When have you really tried long enough and it's not working?
There's no easy answers. You do what you can, make a judgement call on each dog as an individual and live with the decisions you have to make. Focus on the victories.

Thank you for the work you do. God bless, stay safe and take care of yourself because if you burn out they will be lost.

by Krazy Bout K9s on 15 August 2009 - 04:08
Yes It is usually the unwanted, fearful, shy, or not trained overy aggressive, dog and people...all the problem dogs I get too...Once in a great while I get some really nice dogs, that are trained and the people just can't keep anymore...
Thanks for all you do also...Thanks goodness we don''t have mosquitos here...no heartworm dogs here...
I haven't heard from the breeder and someone just called for a watch dog in the country, so Kera is going to that home...they will have to keep her on lead for several weeks and try to get her to adjust to them...I can barely touch her if I can get ahold of the lead she is dragging in the kennel...she does take treats out of my hand from as far as she can reach and very gently I might add...
I really haven't had the time to work with just her...one of the problems with too many dogs in right now...hopefully this week most will be gone...I need a break and some time to work with my own dogs...
Thanks TIG for the PM, I replied...
