A GSD that is watching/playing with a child will either herd the child back before he or she wanders away and becomes lost, or will be "lost" with the child on their great adventure. Assuming there is a fence to keep the dog in that is not an invisible fence, the fence will also keep the child in (until he or she figures out how to climb out).

Let's get real.

The child left the gate open so there is no need to jump the fence.

My dogs know to search for each kid by name. I use that skill to wake up lazy kids in the morning. When they were much younger these same dog skills always spoiled any honest playing of the game, Hide and Seek.

The dog(s) scare the folks who thought they only wanted to turn around in our driveway. Who wants people doing that, anyway? Have you ever noticed the Jehovah Witnesses never notice "Beware of Dog" signs or the actual dogs standing in their way?

Service people and the mailman better not be scared of big dogs if they have your house to call upon. If strangers and other unexpected door bell ringers do have fears when greeted by a GSD, or for more impact, two similar beasts, then they will suddenly freeze and go pale, or start to run and never look back.

The UPS guy always leaves a biscuit with his delivery packages. The dogs always will alert to his presence if he is here, or has been here. So, that must mean they have trained me, fairly well.

They have their favorite visitors, no doubt about it. Some folks are honored with the exuberance in the greeting. Others just know to hide their shoes.
