Yes? All of Rose's puppies stayed in the same crate. To be fair, the crate is "giant" size and Rose's litter weight was on the smaller size compared to what others seem to have. There were 8 puppies and preferred the dog pile sleeping method. By the time all puppies left at 8 - 9 weeks, they were all crate trained; no crying and that is where they went to sleep. I also work from home, so the crate was not a place the puppies had to stay in for hours on end. The crate was also used from the time they could crawl out of the whelping box, so it became a natural place for them to identify as a place to sleep. That was their "bed."

I'm with you on the crate thing joan...I don't care if it's the biggest one on the market, that is no way to keep a litter of 8 week old puppies. OMG...

I won't even sell a pup to someone going to crate them at 8 weeks, sorry, but thats just me.

If you can't treat puppies properly, you shouldn't have them...in this case, this is an accidental litter that you were not planning, so please...do not try to keep a litter of pups in a crate.

ALOT of work goes into raising a litter of puppies, properly.I see you are trying to educate yourself and getting ready for the unexpected.

Usually nature does a wondergul job, and pups are born with no problems. You already have a vet on standby, in the event something does go wrong...THAT is your best bet.

I hope everything works out great for you and the pups

No one has commented on the photos yet.

I really can't guess what breed combo she is from the photo. The head, ear carriage, and colour reminds me of a Jack Russell terrier, but, of course, she's far too big for that. Can you get a better photo, showing a side view, and taken from her level, so the camera is not looking down on her? See the advertisement photos on these pages for an idea of how she should be posed (if you can get someone to help position her, that will make it easier. Treats help, too.)

From her nipples, and the size of her belly, yes, I would say she is pregnant.

How tall is she at the top of the back (withers) and what was her approximate weight (before getting preggers)?

and was told she was a cross between a mastiff and great dane. She looks nothing like it hence, unknown origin.

Yup, you got THAT right!  Teeth Smile  She stands very upright on her legs, so there's maybe some terrier in there, but the head isn't the right shape for that. Whippet or greyhound, maybe? Very hard to say, without a better photo!  And with the way the genes sort themselves out, some pups may almost look purebred, while others may either looks like a mix of mom and dad, or some other breed entirely!

I have a GSD/lab come in here to board that you'd swear was a badly-bred PURE GSD.

Hmmmm...I can't see the pictures, so I can't comment.

I had much the same situation, except that my husband introduced my pups sire to my bitch while I was at work. He thought all the testing I had done for my girl was a bunch of BS, so he just let 'em go at it, before we had the male tested. We did his testing After the fact, & the wonderful folks on here & a lot of reading got me through it. Plus I'm a nurse, that helped a bit with the 'keep calm'. A local breeder was willing to let me watch when her bitch whelped, that helped as well. She used to joke about what was said earlier, if you wanted your bitch to not get bred, you could count on a healthy litter of 12!

Some of the stuff that hasn't been mentioned, the mom bites the cord & eats the placenta & cleans eAch pup, don't get grossed out by that, it helps her stay strong, & stimulates the pup to nurse. The mom licks the pups butt to stimulate them to poop & per...& she eats that too, it's completely normal, & once you have to start cleaning it up you'll appreciate how helpful that is. The pups are incredibly sweet, if your bitch trusts you, handle them daily, get them used to being lifted & gently snuggled. Get a food scale, especially if it's a large litter, weigh them every day to make sure they are gaining weight. I picked up some puppy formula at the local Petsmart & a tiny little bottle so I could help if there were too many or someone had a problem, & of course we had a pup that was born a long time after the last pup, she was a runt & couldn't suck, but we put a tiny drop of formula in her mouth & that started her sucking, after that she was able to nurse. Those little sweeties will be crawling all over by the time they're a day old, so the kiddie pool is a really good idea. My girl didn't want to go into the whelping box my hubby made at first, but she did eventually, with treats & lots of praise. And you must be calm, because it sounds like she's already sensing your anxiety if she's being super clingy. And I gave my bitch ice cream too between pups, she loved it.

I so loved my pups, I was heartbroken when they went to their homes, but they all did well, I communicate with their owners, & everyone is still happy. They are 6 years old now! Handling them, crate & potty training them, & making sure they like & trust people by loving on them will give them a better chance at getting good homes & staying there!

There's more stuff I could tell you, but I have to go right now. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, & if your embarrassed, you can PM me. If I can't answer you, I can direct you to a resource.

Relax, this is going to be fun & exciting! Take lots of pictures! And share them with us, that may help you place a few, too!

Sorry I've been away, things got hectic in my family. Well, I've noticed a few things with her. It appears as though her stomach is smaller, however, her nipples and mammary tissues has gotten larger so my perception of her stomach could be skewed. She did have some spotting, we ran to the vet. Who actually followed her around in the yard to get a urine sample instead of bringing her in (she thinks it's the equipment and residual scents that upsets her so bad) and concluded its nothing more then uterine stretching. She also said not to panic about her stomach, if she did absorb there's no loss or worry because nature took its course.

As for the breed, Dragonfry, it looks like you were spot on. Color matches, face structure is exactly the same and she has the same scruff of skin/hair around her neck. Her screams can be sometimes annoying, she argues about everything very loudly and heaven help us when she's in the car! I didn't know this breed (canaan) but I'm hooked, she's the second best dog I've ever had (first was when I was younger, he was a gd/doberman cross) and I think I'll stick with this breed.

Kalibeck: I didn't think my anxiety could be causing her to be clingy. It makes sense though when I think about it. I'll have to try and focus on something else when I see her, almost ignore that she's pregnant and see if that helps.

I'm keeping everything crossed these next two weeks fly by and health stays in our side. Oh, and she's been sleeping in her whelping box as long as I'm sleeping next to her. But I'm willing to sacrifice my bed for things to go well.

I will keep everything updated and post pics as soon as she starts having them. Just wish this could go faster!

Canaan dog is a rare breed and the likelyhood of an owner tossing a Canaan pup away seems remote. But the important thing is that you two are so bonded. If you allow her to whelp in your bed, you might consider putting the matress on the floor so the pups don't take a bad fall.

Ok, quick question. I don't want to doubt my vet but something doesn't seem right. Her nipples and mammary glands are huge and her stomach feels a bit softer to touch. When should her mammary glands get big? I'm less concerned about her stomach because I believe she did reabsorb some pups, but I didn't think her breasts would get this big so early before delivery. Any thoughts?

How many weeks is she? I have a bred female who started showing at three weeks. Five weeks and she has very pronounced milk ridge and nipples are many times larger than usual. Her belly is big, too. Usually, the larger the litter, the more the mammaries enlarge.

Hi Joanro,

She would be 44 days today, if calculations are correct but I counted wrong before. This count was provided by my vet.
