Don't leave the mother with the pups til eight weeks if they are still attempting to nursing...those teeth will shred her. Some mother dogs won't tolerate pups trying to nurse after four or five weeks. They will learn more from you handling them than from the mother correcting them.
You have twenty days till they're born, so work on finding homes for them now...that way when they are eight weeks old, you can send them home.

I'm sorry if what I said made you upset. I do not think all dogs need to be spayed/neutered,I have a 7 yr old intact female myself. But that decision brings responsibility, accidental pregnancy is not the only risk. Enough said about that. Now move on to getting ready. Decide where in your house to have the "nursery", it needs to free of drafts, quiet, and have the ability to be warm. What will she have them in? There are whelping boxes you can order but I would do that soon so she can get used to it. The more you can learn, the less frightening it will be for you. Hopefully you have a flexible schedule because you will need to be able to stay with her when labor starts until she's had all the puppies and probably at least a few days after. Though I'm sure everything will go smoothly, you do need to have a plan if things don't. Is this something your regular vet can handle? What about nights and weekends? The more you feel prepared, the less stressed you will be which will also help your girl. The best of luck to you!

Btw, fawn, the temp will drop below 99 and pups will come within twelve hours. But not all dogs read the manual. If the pups are born day 55, they would be premature. don't bother her with temp taking til about day58 at the earliest. I wait til they start tearing paper. ;-)

This can happen to anyone...So don't feel so bad about it...If your intentions weren't to breed her then you should learn from the experience...Dogs will do the unexpected...So ALWAYS be ahead of them and predict that they will do the unpredictable...

Now is the time to take care of the female and assume that she is pregnant...Plan as many things ahead of time so you don't have to rush around trying to find things as she's having a litter of puppies...

One thing is to have your vet's phone number ready and if possible tell your vet that you may need his/her help...Now is also the time to ask as many questions as you can think of that you might want/need to know...Don't worry so much about people trying to make you feel bad about what happened...It is now time to prepare and be ready to take care of and accept a littler of puppies...

Thank you all for your wisdom! I've tried to prepare her space but she is insistent on getting in my bed. Even when I treat her for just going in it she whines because she's more then three feet from me, instead of in my lap...and she has some girth even prior to this so that's impossible. I've almost come to grips that she will birth on my bed so I've acquired bed spreads that can be thrown away after and am saving her space until the pups are born (if there are pups) at which point I'm hoping she'd rather be with them than me. I have the emergency vet on speed dial, they are aware of our situation and are on countdown with us. As for homes, I don't know where to begin. My mother and sister have agreed to adopt one each but as far as other families...ugh. Scanning her is impossible so I don't even know how many to say would be available. I've gotten myself in a pickle that's been stored too long and thus has turned into a mushy, sour mess.

I'm trying to stay calm but every time she whines I freak out, even though she's only whining because I'm not touching her or I turned a corner to quick. Honestly, I don't know how the breeders on this board do it, I feel like I could vomit, I think I've lost weight and grown more grey hair then I'd like to admit...not many things can cause me to come unglued, I've now found she's in the top 10.

Again, thank you all for your infinite wisdom. I know she'll appreciate me being calm and in control when she needs me versus running around crying, screaming and fainting.

2 Beers and 1 Valium...or...1 Beer and 2 Valium...I can't remember...Oh hell just take some and drink 'til you feel good or can't remember what it was that you were supposed to do...

You're girl will help you thru it...RELAX...!

Q Man - with that prescription I'll be so relaxed she'll have to do everything on her own, including her temp and then curse me out in the morning lol. Your humor truly helps and hasn't gone unnoticed!

Thank you!

A friend of mine is an experienced dog person, and has whelped a couple of litters. Her husband brought their in-heat female and intact male into the kitchen to feed them, under close supervision.

He turned his back to get a cup of coffee...  Teeth Smile

The litter turned out just fine, even though the parents were half-siblings.

The part that has me scratching my head is why you waited until after the fact to educate yourself about a female's heat. If you wanted to prevent pregnancy, that should have been the FIRST thing to do.  What Smile As you probably know now, she's entering her fertile period when the discharge changes from bloody to clear.

Ah, well, spilt milk, and all that...

Read everything you can get your hands on about whelping. Leerburg has some excellent videos on whelping. They came in really handy during my first experience as a whelping assistant, when one pup was born too weak to nurse, and the bitch's owner had to tube-feed it at 2 am. Talk about baptism by fire! Leerburg had a video that showed the whole thing step by step.

If you can find an experienced mentor who had been through a few whelpings before, that would be a great idea, and help give you the confidence you need.

Nice to see some of you giving the help and advice this woman came here for instead of the usual nasty, snide remarks.

You been given good advice.  ACCIDENTS Happen, thats why they are called ACCIDENTS...

Just do the best you can, by, and for the pups once they get here. Get them the best homes you can, as I am certain you are already planning.

Good luck...and than enjoy your puppues while they are with you

I apologize if I made you feel badly. It was definitely not my intention. It did not appear that you were asking for advice on pregnancy and whelping, but rather just asking if your girl was pregnant. I was trying to make light of the answer that YES it sounds like you will be smelling sweet puppy breath soon. Sorry that my sense of humor was lost in the heat of the situation. Sounds like you have enough help here now, so I will just wish you the best.
