I have been feeding Back to Basics turkey for a year now.

http://www.backtobasicspetfood.com/

Zero grain, zero gluten and zero potato. It is made from organ meats and has never had a recall. I add a vitamin E, a krill oil capsule, a B-12 capsule and lactose free yogurt before bed. Maya has EPI so I also have to mix in her enzymes. I have had to do a lot of research on dog foods, regarding grains, fiber and fat content. I have also learned every single dog is different regarding what they can tolerate. German shepherds are known for digestive issues, so I believe the least complicated the food, the easier it is to digest.
Alot of my yahoo epi group members have had great success with Taste of the Wild Pacific Stream, no grains, low fiber.

Canidae has a new grain free formula out with only 7 ingredients. It looks like a good choice as well.

When it comes to dog food, no truer words are spoken ......you get what you pay for.

I use Merrick grain free. I used to use Solid Gold Barking at the Moon, but it got too damn expensive.

Blitzen,
The reason the one went to the vet is because I could not get the diarrhea stopped. He had it for several days. At first I didnt think it was the food... then when I noticed my female had diarrhea as well. I stopped feeding that bag. My female cleared up within a day... but the pup didnt. So he went to the vet. We contributed it to the bag I had just opened.
I called TOTW and got no call back... I emailed and got no response. I ended up calling about 6 times and emailing several times before I FINALLY got a email back. I no longer feed or will ever feed any food that is made by Diamond. PERIOD! Not worth the risk.

I do highly recommend Blue Buffalo... I know alot of people that say their dogs do very well on it.
I also really like Merrick. They have one manufactoring plant in Texas and have had no recalls. It is a family owned company and they do not source any ingredience from China.

I am currently feeding Natural Choice. I use the Large breed puppy for my almost 6 month old pup. I am using the adult chicken, rice, oatmeal for my female. I normally feed grain free... but the last time I got a bag my store was out.

JYL that was my experience when all my dogs were ill off TOTW as well. Never will a diamond product be fed here ever again. They allowed hundreds of dogs ill and or dieing before the recall that affected my dogs and did not care about their well being.

Nans, I was not aware of that in Bil Jac. I will go back to Blue Buffalo though my older male does not do as well on it.

If I were you, I probably wouldn't feed it anymore either, Jyl.

Thanks to everyone for your input;  am trying to collect different choices of kibble for my newcomer puppy.  Will probably feed some raw but will use some kibble until weaned off and completely on raw but probably not until he get's older.  Not sure will have to see how it goes.  Want something that is healthful for him as well as something that agrees with him.  So far not sure what that will be but will experiment a little with some brands.  Nan

I am feeding Wellness brand for years now with very good results. The adults are on Wellness Core Fish; my allergic older male and my diabetic Schnoodle are on the LID Salmon, and my newest puppy is getting the Large Breed Puppy. Recently I mixed some ProPlan Salmon for sensitive stomachs into the Wellness Core for the adults. It has oats in it, the only grain I find acceptable. I dont have to subsidies with any extra supplements to make them look shiny.

My new pup was getting TOTW venison/bison; as she arrived I put her on the puppy food of it. Her stools were mushy and extremely smelly. I had tried the TOTW for my other guys a couple years ago and had yellish smelly mushy poops.

Many years ago I had tried Flint River Ranch. My dogs then didnt like it as it was very dry and crumbly. They also have had some delivery issues at this time.

Tried just about everything. We now feed Victor Grain free http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/victor-grain-free/

I haven't heard of Victor. I like the Dog Food Advisor site. It seems to give an unbiased evaluation of most commercial food and lists reason for their ratings.  Victor get their highest rating of 5 stars as does Acana and a few others mentioned here. Blue Buffalo 3 1/2 to 4 stars, TOTW 4 1/2,  Bil Jack 2 1/2 partly due to the BHA that was already mentioned here. Flint River Ranch 3 /12, Kirkland 4.

I feed Victor Performance and like it well all of my dogs do well on it. The price is real good at $32.00 for 40 lbs.
