Don Corleone

SSG, like that! A training problem, although genetically influenced.

Having worked (and am working) with both types I'd take Bravo.

Don I already decided on the Chihuahua in the hot tub. Now you have me all confused.

I'll probably end up in counseling over this difficult decision.

Maybe I'll just have a few extra happy pills this weekend.

Number 2 for me, simply because I like that kind of dog. The food drive is a must and the prey drive should be enough and can always be enhanced with drive building exercises. Its just my personal choice its the kind of dog that I am more use to and seem to always have.

Easy pick for me, #2

by SitasMom on 19 February 2011 - 18:02

dog # 1 would be a blast in almost any sport, i would choose him assuming he's been socialized.

I don't need another dog with strong civil and don't want another sharp dog.

For me it would be Alpha, also. I want a dog that is a house dog, that is social and trustworthy around other people and other dogs, that is fun to train and fun to work with, be it Schutzhund or other venues. Deep in my heart, I would want my dog to be more civil and sharp, because who doesn't admire a fearless dog that is willing to fight with all he has because he KNOWs he can whoop anyone and anything, but reality is, I'll take the safe ball driven, sleeve oriented dog over the other one, because the first one will fit into my life and my lifestyle and plans and activities and expectations better  (so, what do I win? - I already have a fanny pack in expectation of your next teacup/hot tub chihuahua schutzhund litter!)

Anyone ever heard of training? That is how you are able to have/handle a civil and sharp dog around people. It takes some know how and some work but it is very possible. Unless of course the dog is really an unstable dog then no... you can not trust it no matter how much training.

SSG - you are implying that the people who would want to choose #1 are doing so because they lack the training skills or training ability to handle a civil/sharp dog. Maybe I have that kind of dog, or have had that kind of dog in the past, and maybe I had it trained in bitework, and he was 100% responsive to me in all situations, even off leash in public areas. Or maybe not. Or, maybe yes, and maybe this dog is now with a k9 handler/trainer - or  maybe not, maybe he is with a trainer who trains k9 trainers (a trainer's trainer) - and maybe this dog is a bit unstable, but maybe not: no-one can really figure him out, maybe that is why such a trainer likes the challenge of working with such a dog. Or maybe there are other reasons why.

Just being a little vague on purpose. some of the above, or most of it, actually is not made up, leaving enough room there for further speculation and unfounded assumptions about people's experiences - which still does not have anything to do with what we LIKE, based on only two choices, as opposed at to what we can handle, and what we HAVE handled and worked with quite successfully considering all the variables.

Maybe the dog I have now would more likely fit in-between the two examples given, and I am completely, head-over-heels happy, satisfied, and impressed with this dog. But if I could not have him, and had to choose between Alpha and Bravo, then still and again, I would choose Alpha, for a number of reasons, which may or may not have anything to do with my training skills, or lack of, as this question is a game, and there are no right or wrong answers.

Vague enough?

I kept  No 1 and  sent no 2 to the police!

No1 turned out thick as pig doo doo but with explosive prey drive for ball or sleeve!  On/off switch - totally equipment focused.

No 2 bites for real, doesn't even bother to ask questions before or after!

I'd have the one in the middle!
