My dog has a major hotspot right now.  I never use hydrogen peroxide, many dr's have told me it damages the skin, it offers nothing that another remedy can't do without damaging good cells (and stinging like a #$%*##$!!!).  Our routine is to cut the hair and shave around the wound, clean it with a warm cloth and dishsoap, and try to keep it clean and dry.  Unfortunately because of the size, location, and the ammount of inflammation, my dog is on antibiotics and pred for the current hotstpot, but the previous one I did not medicate once the hair was removed and the spot was clean.  I had him wear a t-shirt (it was on his shoulder) and a sock on his hind foot so he couldn't bite or itch at it.

REMEDY

malndobe

I had a Dobe years ago who would get hot spots each fall.  I'd take a couple regular black tea bags, the Pekoe Black type, and simmer them in a very small amount of water.  The idea being to make the tea as strong as possible.  Cool, and apply to the sore.  The tannin in the tea will counteract bacteria and fungi, and dry up the sore, helping it heal quicker.  I applied it 3 times a day, easiest to just put it in a little spray bottle and spray some on.

All we use now on our Sasha is the Vetericyn product.  Hot spots disappear in record time and not harmful if it gets into her eyes or mouth.  Not so with all those other treatments like peroxide.  Cear Millan swears by this stuff.  www.vetericyn.com.  Use a bottle of this and you'll never go back.

SistasMom, I switched to salt pool instead of chlorine.  Still as effective as chlorine but it is gentle on skin, mine and my dogs.  As for hotspot remedy, I use Genesis spray twice a day, dries it up quick and I have used goldenseal tea to wash the spot in the past.  Soap and water work well but make sure the soap is mild and all washed out with spot well dried.  I usually use some tea tree oil/rosemary oil/eucalyptus (any of these) to dab around the hot spot on the hair, it has a strong odor and by dabbing it on the hair only, it seems to keep my girl from licking her spot.
