I have a baby gate up at the doorway to my son's room and so far its working. It seems that even though the dogs could jump it the don't. The cat comes down once and a while and stays on top of the refrigerator. The dogs are crated, Hanny is in her whelping box behind a closed door when we are away, and the cat has the run of the house.

This is working, but I'd love to get to the point where the dog doesn't want to actively seek and chase the cat - at least when I'm home.

Well, I never had to use the E-Collar nor will I ever.. I have a really great trainers and used the reward way of training and it works wonder.  It's get the dog to do what you want it to do out of love and not fear.   There have been many great TV trainer, the Dog Whisper and the lady from it's me or the dog.  They have done wonders even with the most aggressive dogs all by love and rewards.   It sticks with them much better than the harsh way of training.  But, I guess to each his own.   I am greatful that my dog listens to me without having to shock the jibeze out of her.  I have 2 cats and m GDS gets along very well with them and they are all in the house.  The cats were here 1st and my dog was a puppy when we brought her home.  Never a problem.  They all lay by one another a snuggle.  It is really adorable.  The only thing I can't get my dog to do is stay away from the door when someone is knocking.  She starts barking aggressivelly and then I have to hold her back to let the person in.  Once they are in and she knows they are not a threat, she will be bringing them her toys and giving kisses.  I just would like for her not to step off the carpet area and let me open the door without having to hold her back.

I used to have an old outdoor tom cat.  I had recently brought home 2, 6 month old working line sisters, and they thought it would be great to eat him.
only thing that ever worked for me with breaking the habit of them chasing my old cat was this:
I placed wide nylon collars on each girl and at least 20ft of line hooked to the collars.  when they would take off after my cat, I would allow them to take 10-15ft of line,  I would yell NO, then I would snap the line back in the other direction, sending both girls flying off their feet. they never linked the correction to me and it quickly broke them of the habit.  they would watch him,  but never took chase again.

not saying other people would aggree with this method,  but it was told to me by an old breeder and it worked.  I doubt I would try this on a 6 yr old dog, and definitly not a pregnant one.  but it is an option for a young, hard headed dog.

we had a bit of a breakthrough last night.

Hanny and Catzilla smelled each other's noses........and no hissing, not running and no chasing......I had Hanny's collar so she know that going after the cat was usless. Hanny didn't even try. Catzilla was able to slowly, very cautiously slink away. Hanny is still very interested.  I would never trust Hanny or any of our other dogs alone with the cat. Lets hope that this trend continues.

Good for hanny.
We had Two cats and a Great Dane growing up. 1 black cat, wild as heck and 1 white cat was a cuddler, thought both cats hate each other and they both hated the Great Dane. Well white cat gets prego from Black cat and after kittens born the only one the White cat would let in the room was the DANE. Was to funny he would go in and lay across my bed and put a paw down there and then she would leave to go potty, eat, take a break. She left the Dane to babysit, and if he did not show up on time she would scream and he would go a running, Was very funny.
