4pack,
Continue with your quest, you're on the right track.Don't let anyone discourage you, your discription of the total gsd is as it should be.This type can live in any home and be a pleasure instead of a nightmare.I think your thinking about how to achieve your goal as a future breeder is dead on.It beats anything that will ever be produced consistently by those willing to settle  on a stud dog because they hoped the pup would turn out perfect.I don't see how anyone could think pups are anything but a crap shoot, even pups from the same litter are a crap shoot, I think its refered to as breeding, not cloning. Although the gamble is still present in the breeding ,whether the sire and dam produce their traits in the pups.I surely don't know of a better way then starting with a pair of dogs that posess these traits.Breed away from the extremes, thats
the way to improve the breed in my opinion.

Red Sable

by Red Sable on 08 September 2009 - 20:09

I don't know about anyone else but a dogs personality is the thing I bond too. A dog with more energy than it knows what to do with has no place here. A slug has no place here, it's gotta be somewhere inbetween. A dog that can lay the hell down in the kennel and chill until the next session and not run the perimiter, a dog that doesn't eat it's own dog house even after 3 sessions of OB and 2 excersize sessions a day. A dog solid enough not to bark at every noise and shadow. A willing partner who wants to learn and to spend time with it's owner, who wants to do the correct thing for the sake of making you happy. I don't want a dog I have to butt heads with or that is a chore rather than a pleasure to work with daily. I don't care how great a dog is on the field, if it's a pain in the ass to live with at home, someone else can have the displeasure of living with that. Nope my dogs are pals and pets first, I have to like them to keep them, trialing is just an outlet for their energy and a test of their abilities for me.

Exactly.

michael and 4 pack:

When and if you our ever in the posistion to breed or make a litter remeber to tell every prospective buyer just as there getting to like a pup "oh by the way all these puppies there just a crap shoot so good luck"

hahahhha when cows fly over the moon.

No body michale is saying to settle for anything less then you want but i supose it,s falling on deaf ears... pearls to swine.

by michael49 on 08 September 2009 - 21:09

Bob,
Nothing is falling on deaf ears, My comment to 4pack about settling on a stud was not aimed at you,it was a statement about people that choose to settle for less then their ideal choice.I don't know you or anything about your breeding program.
I don't even know if you are a breeder,so for me to address you from that standpoint would be ridiculus.Equally for you to address me in this manner is also just as ridiculus, given the fact that you know nothing about me either.I'll give you a little insight about me though,I have bred a few pups,12 to be exact in 50 years of owing and enjoying this breed. Two of these pups are still with me,and always will be.Two of these pups are with relatives. The other 5 pups  were sold as family pets to people that were carefully screened and found to be exceptable owners.Several potential owners of these 5 pups were turned away, because they weren't suitable homes in my opinion. These pups were sold for 400.00 each,so oviously it wasn't about the money. I am and always will be in close contact with the owners of my pups, relatives and buyers alike.
Were my puppies a crap shoot,YES how could it be any other way. How can a person determine that the enviorment, the training, the socialization, the health care, the quality of the pups life in general will be ideal for the pup to become what he was bred to be.What do I claim my pups will become as an adult, I tell the truth as I see it.This pup has the genetics to be a wonderful family pet, nothing more nothing less, but he will be what you make of him.I know every pups personality individually, and I place them in homes accordingly. BTW  Bob I am what a lot of people consider to be a back yard breeder I guess, but I don't feel the need to defend myself to anyone. The pearls to swine comment you made to me I'm not sure of your meaning, but like I said nothing you say to me falls on deaf ears,so if you choose to explain,I'm listening.Well I've exposed myself  to you Bob, so if you feel the need , it's your turn,if not then you have a nice day.

4pack

Bob I really think you need a jumbo Snickers bar to raise your spirits and blood sugar today. I have never thrown anything out, as the breeder begged me for pup #2 back before I ever decided to throw in the towel on the bonding thing and decided to part with her. He is a good breeder with the satisfaction of his customers at heart.

Also if I ever do have a litter, I will personally know most of the pup owners and they will know they will get a refund or new pup, if they are not satisfied. The best you can do, is make an educated guess at what you will come out with in the end, with an 8 week old pup. It is, always has been and always will be a crap shoot. Some of us just get luckier than others. The starts align and a perfectly healthy, temperamnented puppy ends up in the right home.

Bucko

by Bucko on 08 September 2009 - 21:09

I don't deny that the ethical issues are important, but the original question was about price.  Did I miss it, or has no one actually tried to estimate a decent value for this bitch?

I would say she is worth $5000 if the pregnancy and a minimum number of pups are guaranteed.

by michael49 on 08 September 2009 - 21:09

Bucko,
No , it was addressed ,she stated above that she paid what the bitch was worth to her, with no thoughts about the number of pups and their assumed value.I didn't give an amount, but I would agree with you. This should have been a different thread, but It just developed into this, although indirectly, just borne in the heat of the moment

michael:

"How could it be any other way" okay maybe you just don,t get it.
Maybe it,s in your goal of breeding that gets in your way of understanding?  There are many people i,ve exposed my self to even some by request, I,m out here for everyone to see I,m not the one using spiffy screen names to log in on.

If puppies are such a crap shoot why did you make them ? do you just like to gamble? shoot the dice hope for the best? It,s called planning, goals,re search, homework, call it what you will but there are some people who postulate ,consider, work there dogs and try to make a honest valid effort to do the best they can with there breedings.

There are hundreds of things to consider when contemplating a litter are  the dogs them selfs are they what they appear to be or are they bulit to make it?are the grips naturaly full or have they been made to look good are they a taught grip if there taught how fast will they breakdown underpressure what are the drives like workable?can i work with them to acheive my goals?can any one work with them to create there goals or finish mine?  when bred will they be domintae and come to the top or will they be more junk DNA not being dominate them selfs is the structre right for the goal I want to aheieve? wil it be transferable thru heredity? is the partner i,m choosein g going to transfer her better genetics? have litter mates of these animals shown good dominate genetics? what about parents, grand parents, great grand parents? One of the best ways to find out a large percentage of these questions is raise the dog your self know what is in there, find what is workable and useable an deal with the rest... There is NO PERFECT specimen out there because perfection is in the eye of the owner, trainer, breeder this is just the tip of a BIG ice berg to consider.

I,ve seen dogs bred out of world titled dogs that were great specimans on there home field tracked for the handler did great bite work beautiful obedience and sold and when the dog got to it,s new trainng field BANGO major sack of nerves i,ve seen pups with great potential destroyed by human stupidity pups back tied by there collars to a post at 11 months and flanked time and time again because they did,nt see any aggression in the dog ...AT 11  MONTHS for gods sakes...these were good pups destroyed by stupidity. There are more good prospects destroyed by morons and pro trainers then are just not good dogs...

So maybe the crap shoot things could be rethough or maybe you could just say WOW that Bob is a asshole it,s up to you neither will keep me awake tonite, good luck in your endevores with dogs and i wish you the best I,m sure your a fine guy with great intentions...

4pack:

Now i could use that snickers, but i think instead i,ll make me a marqurita ... I hope you find the dog right for you.

Sitasmom:

I do appoligize for temporarly highjacking your thread with my rant...

Being a noobe -  I will seek council with the more expereinced breeders who are sucessfully breeding towards my goal.

Hero will be coming of age in a year, I will make sure to ask Eursport9k, what they think is the best qualities to find in a mate. I will also ask a few other working show line breeders - like Gucci Triampth breder for instance - what they would do. and even Prager (Hans) too.

My goal is be bring some hardness back into the show lines..............I have 30 years to accomplish this goal. Bet I can do it by then.........my beauties will give the working lines a run for their money!

Hanny / Zamb is my jumping in point........it all gets better from here.
