and considering how out of shape most people are the rate of over excersising puppies probably ain't too high

gotcha,i wasnt clear enough.that is what i thought,environment not causing it but amplifying it.

My last GSD, my angel boy- Bruno,  was somewhat cow hocked and had great hips- lived to 14 years old and never had any hip problems. Of course as others mentioned, a good diet is always important, as well as proper exercise and living quarters so that we can give our dogs every advantage possible.

there are people that will argure its enviromental though they would have a difficult time explaining unilateral dysplasia where a dog has one good hip and one bad and unilateral dysplasia has side  predilections in certain breeds not to mention elbow dysplasia .if it were caused by running, jumpimg surely the dog would have bad hips and bad elbows and that is usually not the case
