Genetics is a big part of it and yes alot of backyard breeders are making a meaner dog.  But, there is a sector in the American Pitbull that ONLY breeds for the pulling.  I know BC that is where my sis got her dogs.  The breeder was not breeding for mean dogs at all and they even screened perspective buyers of their dogs.  Sis had a little wiener dog that was mean and agressive and downright antisocial and they wanted a big breed so they got her a pitbull playmate.  The little dog really laid into the pit and the dog was wonderful.  She was always nice and easy going with the mean little one.  So, they got another.  Same deal, nice sweet and they like them much more than the mean little wiener dog.  This was about 8 years ago.   BUT, they were playful dogs.  They would run and play for hours those two pits.

But, I say again, I absolutely think a lot of any dogs problems comes from genetics and what we do when we let one aspect of a dog select who we breed to.  One major reason I like German Imports best.

I would never own a pit.  I just wanted to give you the experiance I had so that you have more information when forming your opinions about them.  Some racehorses would make wonderful kids ponies with the proper training.  Pits are the same.  I am sure that not all are blood thirsty killers.
