Jeff, I don't agree with you but I'm intrigued.  Where are these dogs?

I think if you were less gung ho (sp) about it all, you'd get a better response.... well, one that was more curious than angry.

Chuckie, all was taken in stride.  Acci says he is just fine thank you :) and will be a good dog some day!  All remarks on this board are taken in stride.  I am just overwhelmed that just posting the little guy so my friends could see him and have a chuckle caused so much comment!  But interesting things were said, and in much of it everyone is saying the same thing, good genes will prevail if that is what hits and bad ones just get worse!

If there are over 30 genes for the coat on a dog (i.e. color, length, hair thickness, etc) how can inbreeding "pop" out bad genetics ? Does that mean they never show up again in later litters? Not from what I understand. I talked to my genetics prof who has been studying genetics for 30+ years (yes successfully) about this thought of linebreeding/inbreeding and he just shuddered..........

by Jeff Oehlsen on 31 December 2008 - 12:12

I had genetisists telling me that dogs came from wolves. All I know is that 15 generations later, I still had no hd or ed. I occasionally had odd shit go off, but not nearly as bad as before. The dogs got a bit smaller in size, but lived about 5 years more. I do not know what happens when genes POP it is not really a scientific term. LOL I just know it works. Of course if you are breeding junk, and know that you are breeding junk, dancing around not to get to close as many of you are, then inbreeding will be scary, because you are starting with junk, and it will be ugly.

The reason most people get so angry usually comes from just the idea of inbreeding. Then you have all the scary stories like mystere, who couldn't qualify if the dogs had aggression problems due to inbreeding, or to mistreatment, or training. Just that it is bad. it is bad. it is bad.

I have seen so many breeders dance around this subject, and say how horrible it is. They know that their dogs are genetic time bombs, but do nothing about it.

It is interesting the anger that this produces, most of the time from female breeders. Male breeders do not flip the fuck out. LOL These are my results when talking to people over the years.

Again, this is just a discussion, I have not done anything personal to these people, except show the rest of you that they can't argue a point for shit. LOL Sorry to have pissed everyone off.

As a side note, I have yet to meet a genetisist that breeds dogs.

HA ! You are probably right I should behave myself. LOL The dogs are all gone by now, I stopped breeding in the early 90's. I got what "I" wanted, but they were a bit much for joe average.

I enjoy the internet experts a bit too much occasionally. When you just go out and do something, and muddle through it like I did, talking to this person and that person who has bred many many dogs......good dogs, and if you have a personality like mine that won't not do something just because someone said so, all of a sudden you realize that some of the people that you looked up to as breeders or whatever where just full of shit. That is what I did. I just tried it. I looked at it as a numbers game. If I keep adding numbers (different studs/bitches) I increase my already stunning amount of variables.

So in the end, I had good results. I had to cull, and quite honestly believe that unless you can cull, you are not a breeder, just an enabler. The puppy that crawls off is supposed to die. Too many breeders sell trash at puppy prices because they are to weak to cull. No one likes it, but with all these people talking about the betterment of the breed bla bla bla, LOL Can't cull a pup, but making the breed better. "Well I TOLD them to spay that bitch" LOL

Look at the story of Lance of FranJo, and the coniptions that they went through to keep that puppy alive. He was the start of the hock dragging if you do not know who he is. He was the break away dog and people used him a lot. Read about his beginning. Probably where the scary stories came from. Dog was trash from the beginning. : )

Also maybe I am a bit gung ho, I am a Marine. : )

The fact that he has produced nothing of any worth, ie I have never heard of him, or met him should probably tell you something. I know who bred a lot of the top dogs here in this country.

It is just academia, vs real life.  I have yet to meet a genetisit that has produced shit. LOL Where are the uber dogs ??? LOL

Jeff, he's won tickets with one bitch that I know of.  I shouldn't think he's heard of you but he is known and has judged accross the world... how about you?

Where are these dogs of yours please?

Dead. However, the english are a pretty big joke in the training world, do not know about the "show" world. If he was producing anything of note, I am sure I would have heard of him. Again, this is where academia has failed. I will start breeding again soon, and will send you a creature from the black lagoon if you want. LOL

I'm right behind you on the matter of letting whelps die or culling them if they're sickly or if the bitch doesn't want to know them.  I absolutely agree (you can find previous posts) that "saving" these whelps is a problem, because people may breed from them at some point... what will that produce?

However, breeding with the knowledge that you are almost certain to produce whelps that will need to be culled is a different ball game IMO.

Yes, I've heard of Lance of FranJo... famous even here in the UK... for all the wrong reasons!
