back to first question.  it limits options, and takes away distractions.

it can be done on the ground.  but as many people who have used tables will tell you it can take longer.

i have done some table work under people who have learned from gene, and others.    do not be fooled.  there are different ways to use a table,  i have yet to see ONE way that works for all dogs.     as with many types of training (choke collar, pinch collar, e-collar, table, force tracking)  they can be used  correctly and they can be used wrong.

as with any advice taken from this or any other messageboard, get all the facts you can, and make sure that you are comfortable with the type of training being done on your dog.   you should watch the training first and then decide if that is something that you want to do.  it helps if you can understand the principels behind the training.

i use to have a video that showed training bird dogs to hold and retrieve using e-collars.  its an old tri tronics video that Dobbs did.  they used the table in it.   have to see what the date on that vid. was.

Steve,

You don't need to thank me at all, but I am awwed by your knowledge and humbled enough to learn!  I am just bummed that my cell phone battery died and my husband gets quite fussy if I am on it much before 7pm....Oklahoma time!!  I sure wish I could come with my dog and spend a few days with you but I don't think a few days is enough!

I know that our conversation IS NOT FINISHED by any means!  I will look forward to talking to you on Saturday or Sunday if that is ok!  I have other training questions to ask that are not related to tables......or maybe they are, I don't know!

Cmon, if you need a table to build drive or just frustrate your dog into looking interested.. try try again.

When all you people eventually get tired of making excuses for your dogs, you will see this for what it is.

dawgma,

Till you actually use a table technique your statements are based on  ignorance!  But at least ignorant people can learn!  The table isn't a place where negative training techniques take place!  My dogs that have been on the table (2 dogs on a square table)  LOVE the table for bite work!  They even know what the word "table" is!!  I ask them as I am getting them in a harness, "Do you want the table?" and they fire up and drag me along!  They drag me as fast as they can to the table and jump up on it by themselves on their FREE WILL!  Excitedly waiting for the decoy!
