Most breeds have likewise bred themselves in the same corner by overusing the same stud dogs. Over the years some breeds have petitioned AKC to re-open the stud books to bring in new blood. The Basenji people are great examples of what a united effort can accomplish. For the second time they have gone to Africa and selected dogs that look like Basenjis but do not carry the fatal gene they are trying to eliminate. AKC has once again opened the stud book for that breed and they will remain open for  quite a few years.

IMO this breed is extremely lucky in that it has many choices to expand the gene pool - working lines, showlines, etc as jfletcher has already said above. The question is will the breed take advantage of  this or continue status quo until there are no healthy dogs left?

I have been mixing show and working lines for many years and have produced good 'all-round' dogs with super characters, looks and working ability. Health issues in dogs of my breeding, are to my knowledge, virtually non-existent. In my honest opinion I feel that this is definately the way forward for our breed and  I will have no hesitation continuing this way in the future.

Below is a link to give an idea of what can be produced by mixing show and working (am unable to download photo onto here directly)

Ros, if I may make a suggestion, if you haven't already done so, I'd encourage you to have your male dogs collected and frozen. You never know what the future may hold for this breed and your bloodlines may one day be recognized as valuable to the breed.

Finally! Someone who can see the 'total picture' of what has happened to the GSD breed in the last couple of decades! Thank you very much for posting that article!

I wish my German were better. That is such a valuable article, it would be well worth the time for someone to go through the translation and 'clean it up' a bit, to make it easier to understand. Web translators never do a very good job of translation, and I had to go back to the original article several times to untangle the mangled syntax.
