No, he is a Geman showline, but I do think the longer thigh could be his problem.  It's as if he has too much hindleg to fit comfortably under his body.  Only at a fast trot does he even out and move decently.

A roach back is for greyhound types, not shepherd dogs.  1 runs all-out, the other trots.

As for "a true roach is higher back than withers" - I'd say don't obfuscate the point being made.  Show Germans are "roached" with round backs and largely have been for 30 years, definitely 20.  Call it what you want.  They trot as if they're under great strain, like pulling weights, and that isn't "effortless" at all.

I totally agree with Rebel, a roach is call for runners!

And yes some Am. Bred are cow-hocked but sometimes it is more when they are puppies.   I only have Am. bred right now and none of them are cow-hocked and they have very good hind angulation.  Cow-hocked is cow-hocked and it is not acceptable in any GSD Am bred or German bred..some who say it is ok are wrong. Sometime it is  a combination of too much upper tigh and long hocks.  Anyway you just have to look under the hocks and you will see that there is an extra pad growing in the middle of it!  A GSD should be able to walk normally, jump, and gait without effort like a well lubricated machine..that's what the standard say..

The back is suppose to stay straight while gaiting..

Can't achieve that with a roach and steep croup (I think it's a big problem in german lines).
