LMH,
Yes, I can't get the picture of a young pup dying from neglect as in this case. In my rant, I failed to mention the amount of mess people seem to think is acceptable to leave behind. The host club must be very proud of themselves.

There was no mess left behind. Thanks to the many volunteers from the New England Region. The Regional Director put out an e-mail asking for volunteers and they came out from every club in the region. The hotel grounds and the show grounds were picked up at LEAST twice a day. Ask me how I know! The volunteers did an exceptional job. The last time a sweep was made of the hotel grounds was after everyone checked out. We might not have gotten it all, but the biggest majority was picked up and disposed of as it should be. By the way, I did go out and offer people bags that where not picking up after their dogs.

Donna, that's the way to do it. I've helped with a LOT of AKC shows and we always made sure the grounds were clean before we left. We wanted to be able to go back there again. You can't follow around every dog scooping up as soon as it makes a mess, but you can be sure that it's all done when the club members leave for the day. I've cleaned up after many professional handlers and well known breeders too. Too bad that a few rotten apples always manage to spoil the barrel.

Guys-
I know you're very aggravated and upset about the tragic death of the puppy---and unless I've missed something, I really don't understand laying this blame on a host club. Just trying to be fair here.
People are responsible for their own actions, in my book anyway. They should make use of the trash cans that were made available to them. They are all adults, and should not need (forgive me, Blitzen) boy scouts to follow them around and be their servants. I gather there are some political concerns in play here, but not being privy to inside info, for me to comment would be ludicrous.
My view on clean-up crews--If you keep cleaning up after people, they begin to expect it. Let them be adults and clean up after themselves.
I really wouldn't lay blame of the puppy's death on anyone but the one who was actually responsible. That's a pretty heavy burden to put on someone. I'm sure the owner is feeling that very heavy burden, and would give anything for this not to have happened. It was inexcusably stupid, but he or she might also know that and be hurting something awful.
It was a wakeup call for everyone. Today, I made sure my AC was running cold before riding home with my crew after their running in the field.

LMH, I agree that it shouldn't be necessary to clean up after adults, but the sad reality is some just will not do it themselves. If the hosting clubs want to keep their good sites, then either they do it or find an organization who will or they will not be back next year.

Donna,
I agree with you! I think the volunteers from the New England Region did a fantastic job! And on top of that, no one even noticed that the last state flag was hung up backwards! to whomever's state flag that was, we humbly apologize.

Oh my gosh Dee! Was it really....Yes we do apologize! Poor Dee's arms were so sore and the rest of us were so tired we didn't even notice!!!!

LaPorte, you mentioned above: "Can't agree with you more, but if the offenders are the ones voting, nothing's gonna get done. Just like that felon issue. What a no brainer - yet it got tabled. I'm still in shock on that one."
What felon issue? Would you please let me know? You can email me if you would rather.

I was one of the volunteers - not picking up poop, though I ended up doing that too - but doing other "odd jobs" - and I started from day 1, carrying a supply of poop-bags in my pockets. I was handing out medals to the puppies in the progeny groups on Sunday - blue for boys, red for girls - and saw a puppy-handler standing near the fence, gazing off into the distance in the opposite direction of her puppy which was laying down a huge load - she was obviously going to conveniently "not notice" and walk away as soon as he was finished. The poop bags and container was no more than 10' from her! Just as she started walking away, I arrived, smiling, friendly, and handing her a bag. She smiled back and turned to pick up her dogs' poop - but I got the message "you b$#$%" - off I went on my merry way -
it was a huge problem, but one that was taken care of by the volunteers who spent the entire show not watching/enjoying/socializing at the show, but instead in the parking lot, grassy areas, and around the hotel, picking up others' trash and dog crap. Kudos to them, they were the true workers at this trial.

The true WORKING CLASS. Thank you to all of the volunteers. Hopefully you guys saved the reputation of the "Show People", even if they didn't care about it. I wonder if anyone noticed a difference between the way people behaved (or misbehaved) at this CT show compared to the St Louis show. I was at that one but missed this one. Just curious, it seems that it would have been many of the same participants, handlers and such..
