We had a ditch rider who would check water every day. When he came by the house would talk to her over the fence. A friendly guy. One day he broke his shovel or something happened to it so he ask the wife if he could borrow one. She said sure and opened the gate and led him to a shed we had. All the racks, shovels and stuff was leaning on it. He was following her and she reached for a shovel and another one started to fall toward her and the guy lunged toward my wife to grab it, and the dog fired on him biting him in the lower back.
Luckely he was wearing a cowboy belt, but still cut him pretty bad, and was shaking the daylites out of him. She called of the dog instantly, petted the dog on the head, and offered to take the guy to the dr. He declined said he didn't blame the dog. And left.
Even though it was bad, the dog done exactly what it was suppose to do.
These dogs need to be tested. If it won't bite to protect I don't want it. And in response to what Ronin wrote, most won't if you blast in on one and pressure him quick, they will back off under fast hard pressure, if they can. You are better off to know rather than think you know. Fight training should be a part of it , not just sleeve work. It is no game if someone intends on killing you or causing you harm.

After getting this far in this thread I , respectfully have to disagree with you....
Quote from MY DOGS DID :
"Ah, but a person will instinctively put his arm up to protect his face and head when the dog lunges!"
And the statement asking about MALS? and several other deductions, even owning GSD for 34 years does not make a man who needs to go buy a pup that has the quality that WOULD be trained for protection or even just doing what a real GSD should do without ppt
NO way in CORN COUNTY, my trainer, David Moore 26 yrs ago would have even let me near a pup from SteinigTal., FLUSStal, until , even knowing I owned a completely trained GUARD DOG< PROFESSIONALLY used in our automotive shop, dead then, I had been thoroughly versed, shown and evaluated by him, and then he ordered my first foundation dog out of Cadette v BuseckerSchloss.
No way would I sell one of my pups to someone with the above statements posted on this thread .
Mine were not pets ., and I would insist he ,no matter how many POLICE trials, police raids you go to or training, which I did many years of, would that give me the END OF THE LEASH training and me even have a clue what I was in for.
I guess I am old fashioned but the above testimony of VAGUEness is not even anywhere near ready for a dog to use in his home for his own protection or anyone else..
Obviously he has never had a KONIG , or a THOR or a BEAR on the other end of a leash...
Poster needs training and some real life coaching before he tries to find a pup.,
THe dogs you have now are not gonna ever take the incentive. I do not have one gsd on my property that would not entertain , laying you in your tracks if you came over my fence or entered my home and even made a dance towards me.. YOU would immediately stop in your advance and I would command, and none of mine have PP on them much less are trained for protection..THEY do it automatically with their inbred instinct as I am alpha master and you just encrouched on MOMS territory in a harsh way.
you can own 200 german shepherds but you still do not understand PPT.

youre right I dont mind the high prey but damn they should be abble to protect their handler without training breed standard, it must be a good nerve dog solid as not to turn to aggression but again defend his family if needed, it is to be used for almost any sport or work, unfortunately it does not appear and if the dogs are so insecure that they dare not defend their master or family so they do not ski bred in the race under standard
