4pack

Ok Jim suggested using a mirror for positioning, not an option for me, I don't have room inside to train a heel. My dog is crooked too, something we have worked on forever because I screwed him up with the reward in the right hand thing.  Any other suggestions on how to fix the crabbing or wrap around without walking with your head on backwards? All I can think of is, low stim and let my TD hold the remote, because I can't see my dogs butt behind me. The only other way is to look downa dn back when the dog sits and my dog knows to fix it when I do that, unaxceptable at trial.

I'm with Kreiger, lets bust out some videos.

On the GSD side of the forum, someone posted a video several months ago of them working their 8mo old dog.  For such a young dog he was working quite nicely.  I tried a quick search over there but couldn't find it.  Again, if someone does link to it, this was a YOUNG dog, not a finished product, but I thought Kreiger might like to see it.

I found it, Kreiger:   http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/forum/22206.html#22359

Again, just a PUPPY, a work in progress - but I don't think you'll miscontrue, and you'll appreciate the positive.

Steve that is a beautiful OB portion. If you are training with this guy, you are a lucky SOB. My sport is so much more relaxed than Sch but I'd like my dogs to be snappy like Como regardless, not gonna happen with my current male, he is just very large and slow. Como makes that routine actually fun to watch. Maybe someday I will get the speed and energy in there but it's slow goings when I do 95% of my OB at home by myself with no pointers.

Thanks steve 1  ! Now that we got the phonies out in the open they can actually give some advice! Probably would not have happened if somone did not  urge the truth out! I have been told that the dog reacts to ones body position in the sitz is why the dogs rear end kicks out a little1 when  brought to my attention I noticed my upper torso was out of alignment which causes the dog to kick out to be square with the handler! Hard for the handler to see it unless they get an honest evaluation! At least that is  five time schtz 3 trainer told me1 Guess she knows what she is talking about !

4pack,
Here's something that worked well for me for crabbing.  I have lots of focus with my dog but his butt started swinging out to the left.  When I "fuss" I keep the ball behind his head, he ignores the ball and focuses on me yet he knows it is there.  I  reward straight down the left side of my body and throw the ball behind me.  Alternate, periodically with the dog not getting the ball.  You have the dog on a leash and quickly snatch the ball up holding the dog back.  You can never reward frontally or from the right side again or the dog will revert back to is original behavior.  I started with 1 step, then 2, then 5, etc not progressing until the dog was completely straight.  Up to 15 or 20  steps correct, then lots of left turns.  Also keep the leash in the right hand, behind your back and correct backwards with the right hand.  The leash should be wrapped around your body under your butt and you correct backwards, especially on left turns.  If you have a remote you can have someone else gives stimulation as you make your turns and correct backwards. The stim doesn't have to be high, but it should be simultaneous with the leash correction.

This is tricky to learn and uncomfortable or awkward at first.  Remember, the left hand has the toy and it is either straight up under your armpit or behind the dogs head.  You still need the focus on you and not the toy, release with a "yes" or good command and throw the toy backwards.

Of course it is easier for those that teach their dog where their butt is supposed to be right off the bat.

Hope that makes sense,

Jim

Pack, Kreiger and Co
Take a look at this Video, It is of Ronny van den Berghe training Como, Pup Izzys Daddy to be at 8 months old,
He is a true master at what he does well i think so, and if i can be only one quarter as good then i will have done okay
I hope you can get it to work. I think he is Top Class

Steve I noticed in the video the pups butt was sticking out also, I am having the same problem with my 10 mo old but did not have this problem a few months ago. I have taken some steps backwards in his heeling and I am not doing so many steps forward and doing alot more left turns. I am using food in stead of the ball right now so he can think better ( not able to think with the ball)  I do use the ball for other exercises but will bring the ball back in the pic after he understands to keep his butt in.

Denise
What we do is as we tell the Pup to Sit we Touch its hind quarter with the left hand, if you do this the Pup will bring its rear end into line straight to your leg and if you notice Ronny looked down,
We always look down every time a Pup sits or stands next to the handler to keep postion correctly, and just a touch as i said will move the rear end in to line after some time as you see you do not have to do it but it does help
with no stress or hassle to the Pup

Thanks Jim, I already do the ball out over his head thing. Wasn't sure it would do the trick in the long run. I get the best results, high drive, high stepping doing this but was affraid I might start a new problem if I kept it up every time. I guess I will keep on with that then and see how it goes.

P.S. I think I forgot how to turn right.
