<<Can you explain to us exactly how you go about training the GP's to guard? What age do you put them in with the sheep? how do they react? How do you go about feeding the GP's? how long does it take for them to bond to the sheep, and how do the sheep react to them?

There is little training involved with guard dogs. The little training applied is actually just correcting undesired behavior such as chewing on lambs whose tails are docked and are about to fall of, such as excessive playing with the sheep, such as leaving the flock (you chase them back). The dog either has the instinct or it doesn’t. If it doesn’t have the instinct you can forget about it. I think guarding livestock is by far based on instinctive behavior more than any other dog training I know of.

You put the dog in at 8 weeks of age in a small quarter (barn, barn yard, small paddock etc.) with sheep with lambs. The dog must be given a place to retreat where an adult sheep cannot follow it in case they try to hit the dog. You do not play with the dog, you do not pet the dog, you just put the feed out in dish or self-feeder. Say hi if you like but don’t try to be buddies. Bonding with the sheep is taking place rapidly, can’t give you a time, though. Sheep that are not used to it react at first (again, small area is important) but figure out soon that the dog is no danger. The white color helps the sheep to settle in soon, white dogs are less feared than dark dogs. I here and then praise the dog when I see it barks at something or somebody. However, I don’t know if that is actually needed.

<<When buying a guard dog, what qualities do you look for in a pup? Or do you go by the parents?>>

I go by the parents or I buy from a reputable breeder.

<<You did not really care for either of my dogs out of czech border patrol / czech working lines, but I respect your opinion.>>

I don’t recall. Where and when did we meet?

Ulf,
Sorry if I do not answer your remarks line by line.
There are a few things I disagree with you about , but I have no desire to argue them with you.

As for paying the bills, I have a couple of friends in the (organic) meat and produce business.
I also have friends trying to make a living training animals, dogs and horses.

I wish you all the success in the world no matter what country you came from originally.

You do seem to have an attitude and a thin skin when it comes to certain things that's easy enough to see.

I was disappointed that you felt you had to post your videos in the other forum, and that you are talking in general terms and not so much specifics.

This I also understand.

As for titles,
Nothing is lost when a dog works, and performs well, just because it has only been judged by its owner and not titled.

It's also ok if your Pyrenees is a cross, glad you mentioned that.

I feel anymore discussion with you at this point would become confrontational so I bid you a due.

Moons.

Ulf, I think your presence is both wanted and needed here.  I hope you continue, also.

I'm wondering, when it's time to work with the gsd and livestock, how do you go about separating the guardian from the flock?

Folks, I enjoy this discussion and I am mightily surprised about how much interest it triggered. Please understand that this is very time consuming and I have just now a lambing season starting. So, I will be a bit limited with time here and then. If I forget to answer your question just remind me and I will get to it eventually.

I also would like to consolidate this discussion which takes place in two different threads. Any chance you move any further question directed at me from this thread over to “HGH training video clip” http://www.pedigreedatabase.com/gsd/forum/32053.html#32119

Ulf  I posted reply to the other thread.
