Thanks all. Many and varied opinions. My wife and I are going to someone's home this coming Saturday to view three dogs. It is 80 miles away. Two Shepherds and one Rottie. They are obedience trained only. We have decided that we are going to go with getting a large dog that is not trained to attack, and hope it is enough deterent to send any potential bad person elsewhere. As I see it, it can't hurt to have a large dog. Of course if the bad guy is determined to come and get us, then we will do what we have to do, but for reasons of liability and concern for mistakes on our part or on the part of the dog, we are not going to get a dog trained to bite. I did not realize this was such a difficult decision. When you check out all of the web sites advertising protection dogs, it sounds so easy and sure. I have learned a lot in the past two weeks. I will let you guys and gals know what we end up with. I won't be caring much about pedigrees and such. Just a nice, rough looking, obedient and healthy dog. We are not going to tell anyone that the dog bites, but will not tell them it doesn't bite either. Thanks.

DR and DH are both right on. (Big surprise there LOL) I myself do not like pistols though. An 18 1/2 inch double barrel 20 ga makes a very formidable house weapon with a lot of advantage. 1. To the bad guy looking down the barrels those bores look AWFUL big. 2. No excessive recoil. 3. You don't really have to aim just point it in the general direction. 4. Stray rounds are not as likely to penetrate a few houses and kill one of your neighbors. 5. A shotgun can be loaded with anything from rock salt to slugs depending on need. 6. if you need more than 2 shots, forget it you are done
