Here's  some things for those of you who think 'the standard is the standard' (and is never going to change.) to chew on. How do you think the ASL shepherd got from the way it was in the '60s to the way it is now, with its extreme angulation and sidegait? It happened the same way it is happening in the German SV showrings and breed surveys!

Louis Donald has been carrying out a long-standing campaign against overangulated dogs. Here's a quote from his Facebook page:

Louis Donald: I was having a conversation at the National with a Specialist Judge/Breed Surveyor who was talking to me about my long standing crusade against overangulation of the hindquarter. At the end of the conversation that very prominent Judge Surveyor said '' I know you are right but [pointing to the SV judge who was judging in the ring as we were talking] dogs that you like that have moderate angulation, I accept that they are dogs with correct angulation but they don't win under Germans. I know you are right, I have believed you for a very long time but I have decided that I am going to go with the people who win and I am going to start breeding dogs with deeper hind angulation, I have to otherwise I won't win at shows'' For me that was unbelievably devastating because of what it was saying, it's impact on others. and I expressed that to the person who simple said '' thats the way I am going now'' This is not a made up story, this is a fact and it would not be an isolated case believe me.

Another poster also mentioned about the measuiring of dogs:  Joyce is correct, dogs heights have been lied about for years , I have had mine downgraded and knocked for size yet watched equally large, if not bigger dogs get promoted. I don't mind the truth been told about mine but object to those who get away with cheating the breed with their deceit and lies. Too much of il scratch your back if you scratch mine goes on when all the breed needs and asks for is truth and honesty. Not all big dogs produce oversize, same as not all small dogs produce within the standard, but what the true ratio is we have never known because of all the lies re the real height of a dog. Same goes for character, if the dog is being overly attracted to help hide the problem and the judge prepared to overlook it because it belongs to the right ppl, then once again the breed suffers as the problem is perpetuated each time it produces progeny

I agree pretty much with SS. I can probably take a show photo of most of the Va dogs from the last 10 years, photoshop the topline and refine the head a bit  and end up with a dog that most here would swear is an ASL. Movement photos would be harder, that's where much of the similiary ends. Not trying to dump on anyone, I myself prefer the German dogs, it's just the way it is in this breed. It's easier to recognize faults in the dogs we don't like than the ones we do.

Anyway, I hope that both of the Sieger shows get good quality entries. It will be interesting to compare the placements, especially in the working classes.  Maybe next year we will see an IPO trial along with the GSDCA Sieger. May not have been enough time or workers to offer that this year. For me hope springs eternal.

SS, doubling for the temperament test in the GSD AKC ring is also common and ignored by most AKC judges too. I've only ever seen one breeder judge announce from the beginning of her assignment that doubling during the temperament evaluation would not be tolerated and it wasn't. One of the big players got called out for doing it - I said not in MY ring and I meant it LOL. Pretty funny.

Sun, the best system can´t be functioning without problems, if the people belonging to this system don´t follow the rules.
And I´m not talking about  the "heads" of this system, I´m talking about its members.
Even if I repeat this now for the 10. time:
Nobody is forced to breed to  the "flavor of the day", nobody is forced to breed prey monsters, nobody is forced to breed oversized or overangulated dogs!

Why do people do so?
They want to make money
They want to win
They want to become famous in the dog world

These are not the best intentions for breeding working dogs.

Exactly, Susie!  And even if you start out with your goal being the 'beterment of the breed', you are not going to change anything if no one is buying your dogs!  Sad Smile

Blitzen,

Were here talking about ASL dogs again because they are the exclusive contribution of GSDCA to the rest of the world.  SO the question is which standard is GSDCA espousing?  If they are the parent club of the GSD in this country then they should LEAD and point the direction that they believe the BREED should take in THIS country.

So which direction is GSDCA leading the German Shepherd Dog in the United States?  It's a simple question really.

Which way are we going?

Funny story, years ago I was doing a CD at a show when the judge stopped me during my routine to go yell at the conformation ring. All the bells and whistles had gotten my dogs attention to the point that he was facing behind me and walking backwards so that he was still "heeling" with me, in reverse.  Who knew he could even do that?

The judge went over there and was ripping them up and I'll never forget his comment that he's, "put up with their damn cowbells but he's had it with the whistles".

Mean while I was standing there going "oh crap" do I really want to be showing under him right now?  Needless to say, we didn't do so well that day, but we had fun.

I think you're preaching to the choir, bz.
