What you need to do is establish yourself as pack leader. Do soem some research and for goodness sake understand what you are doing. For starters dog pshycology is very basic how cesar milan states it is what it is: Animal DOG, BREED, NAME. Do some research. Watch his show to understand Dog mentality and watch wolf documentaries. Afterwoods it becomes very obvious as to who pack leader is and how pack leader manages his pack the presence is always assertive and the followers are calm and submissive with order maintained until challenege occurs.
You have several options: correction based training slip chain/ prong (only use if you understand and know what your doing!! otehrwise you'l just injure...)
To establish your voice as a corrective measure you must use this or force the dog into submission by overpowering with strength (do not do if you are not assertive enough)
clicker trainer: very simple read up about karen pryor (very effective method).
personally i use both clicker training for good behaviour and slip lead training and my fingers/hand on the neck to act as a bite for bad behaviour.
Its simple... Establish yourself as pack leader.

As I read your original message you were interested in stopping your dog from barking. I referred you to Cesar Milan. He does this consistantly with little trouble. There is no electric shock, prong collors, but an easy, methodical and quick way to stop the barking. If this is what you want turn into Cesar Milan on the National Geographic Channel and be plesantly suprised. ecs
