Every dog has a history - if we buy an 8 weeks old puppy we know its history - if we buy an adult we don´t.
and at the end of the day there are reasons that are "discernible" for the dog, but maybe not for us.
as long as the dog is healthy, there is always a reason for its behavior, sometimes we only don´t find out.

I love her with all my heart but she has MAJOR issues. Not health issues, she HATES everybody and everything. She is great with my family but anyone else NO WAY. Dogs, cates, horses, snakes anything that moves has to die.
I was never able to fix that problem even though I consider myself a pretty good trainer. Why did I put up with it for so long? Well, I learned to deal with it. She lives inside and has to be crated when anyone comes over.
So, this shows that we don't know the history and this could have ended up pretty bad if she would have been adopted by someone else that did not know anything about dogs.

I wasn't trying to be an ass but maybe I came off too strong. I assume that people on here, especially the breeders just know what I mean. I'm glad others were able to support my idea/s.

I disagree that a "perfectlys sane" dog "just mentally breaks and snaps" as you say, rather, I agree with Bhall and Susie's (also pertains to Joanro's story) most recent posts 100% and I also agree that in your situation, a rescue is not necessarily in either of your best interests.
I have to be honest Jenni when I read some of your post I just don't know how to take you, so you do put me in fight mode most of the time. First you say I'm naive and now say you don't agree with me yet you double back on yourself by saying "I disagree that a "perfectlys sane" dog "just mentally breaks and snaps" as you say," I never said a perfectly sane dog would snap did I?! I said I couldn't take the chance that a dog would snap, a dog that I knew nothing about. You are saying one thing but you are talking about something completely different. Sane vs unknown sorry if you don't see that.
From now on I think I will just pass on your post unless you make it perfectly clear that your intentions/attitude isn't what I perceive it to be.

I agree that if a dog/animal is mistreated and or beaten that the dog can and will most likely snap (and the responsible party will deserve what's to come). I wasn't really talking about that though. As an example lets say you get a 2-3yr old dog from the pound and everything is great but you have/had no idea that the original owner beat the dog with a red broom handle, one day you tell the kids to sweep the kitchen with your brand new red broom and they start doing what kids do and engage their new red light saber. This will most likely not have a good ending. That was the only point I was trying to make about me not getting a dog from the pound.

Jenni, No, I didn't mean it as a joke. I was trying to simply put that I need to make sure the dog is sound. If I have no idea where the dog came from and what its parents are like then how do I know if it will be a sound dog? I'm sure you will disagree with this and/or you are simply trying to bait me into something. But just so there is no misunderstandings on what I am saying, I have seen an animal just snap. I have actually witnessed this action. A perfectly sane dog just mentally broke and had to be put down. You could say it was a freak accident and it very well may have been no one really knew why it happened it just did. So again for MY situation I chose to be as cautious as I can be and make the best desicion for ME. |
Right there, highlighted, is where I got that phrase from.
Not sure why you think I have some weird, hidden agenda with you (trying to bait you into something???). On the contrary, I am pretty blunt. Ignore my posts if you don't like them, but don't overthink them. I say what I mean.
