My brother lives on Long Island, I called him this morning. He said other than no power his place was fine. But said his next door neighbor's two cars were under water and totaled. He said it was a real mess there, with the fires and all.
On top of all this, there was an earth quake up the road from us yesterday morning. I didn't feel it, but heard a huge boom, like a deep explosion.
Plus snow for this time of year is nuts....none here at the house but in the nw part of the county... It's cold enough and sky looks like it could snow here.
Hope every one is ok.

I wish this Sandy will finish with minimal losses of people's lives and damage to their property. My heart goes out to all people in the affected areas, God be with all of you, wish you safety.

Glad to see you guys chiming in so we know more of what's going on. Marjorie is in Long Island. If anyone hears from her or about her please post an update.

Joanro you were saying it is too early for this type of cold weather. Do you think that is from the storm or just because the weather is getting more freaky?  I ask because even tho we have had no storms to have effects from we have had 3 freezes here already and the other day had snow not just in the panhandle but also in the northern part of the state. Very unusual and early. I think the weather is just getting freakier and freakier.

Vonissk, there was a massive cold front that collided with the hurricane. So all that moisture from Sandy turned into huge snow storms. There are still winter storm warnings for the mountains here in NC tonight. The warnings for the counties stop at my county, as we are just below the elevation for the winter storms. Unheard of for this early in this neck of the woods.
Jim Cantore said tonight that this extreme weather is "the new norm", so get used to it. He also said that New Jersey needs to prepare for five hundred year storms, not hundred year storms when they rebuild.
Cantore also said that all the droughts in the west are also the new norm. So I would say that CLIMATE CHAGE is upon us.

Take a deep seat and hold on tight !!

Woke up this morning without power!! I am guessing the utilities had to shut us down to fix something else . The kid is freakin' out because he only wants his Halloween party .... With power! He just left to see what is up... On his bike.

i am going to try to make coffee with a French Press ...

Edited...I am happy to say, my French Press coffee is okay, and we have our power returned! Kid is happy again!BatCoffee

Toronto got hit rather hard, with trees down and power outages. One woman was killed by debris from a flying Staples sign. Sad Smile Nothing compared to what happened in New York and New Jersey, though.

Here in Bradford, we had more wind than rain, though it was the wee hours before things got really bad. I looked out my bedroom window around 2 am, and the trees were whipping around like crazy.

Was pleasantly surprised in the morning to find the winds had died, the power was still on, and only a few small branches had fallen off the trees!  Teeth Smile

Lots of leaves to clean up, though, when these blasted rain showers finally stops!

No power here, just charged the cell off of my car. Had to go back to work today, hope they 'll let me take a shower there! Most of the nearest town has no power, those huge utility poles that support high tension power lines were snapped in half. So many trees down, you can't get around, it took me hours longer than usual to get to work. I guess my fridge & freezer both full, are total losses, as our generator was damaged by a fallen branch. & won't run; of course there are no others available. PP&L says 7 to 10 days before power will be restored. Sucks.

A gas grill can be a life saver when the powers out, so can a cooler if you can get ice.
We only had wind and a few bands of rain here but I know what it's like to be ten days without power.
With a downed freezer I'd say invite some folks over for a cook out.
Dogs too..

Hey Moons, glad you're OK! Unfortunately the same branch that took out the generator, which we put up on our deck to shield it (NOT), also split the hood on the grill, & it's been steadily drizzling/ misting & cold....but our dogs will benefit, I'm sure. I got a robotic phone call from PP&L  saying that my power would be restored by November 4th @ 11pm. Not 30 minutes later Carl called me at work to say the lights were on! Then PP&L robo-called to say the power was on. Yippee! We were without power for 7 days after Hurricane Floyd, it really did suck!
