A bit off topic, but man I am right there with Deanna.... that pup is GORGEOUS!

Jeff....I would hope their natural canine instincts kick in, and they eat whatever they need to survive....be it by way of kill, scavenge or dig up......being opportunistic & hunter.
This is why I think a "balanced, natural diet" is closest to what they would eat.....if they had to rely on survival instincts.....

but I will admit...I've seen some dogs with so little basic survival instincts (my mother has one)...they would easily become another's meal....this lil dog only eats *when* my elderly mother hand feeds it......I hope my mother out lives the dog....cause..........!!!!noangry

Jeff Oehlsen  "They look like normal pups, except for the black one that looks like a collie mix with the fur.
I saw a GSD/Collie that looked just like that years ago, then I saw it's littermate and except for a little longer fur, same as that one as well."

LOL.  Well Jeff the reason for the collie look could be that my previous dog was a rough collie.  I spent almost 15 years
brushing a collie so it's all i know  :)

I feed kibble, and not even a super high grade of kibble at that (Blue Seal Natural 26).  I managed to get my old hock-walking Am lines GSD to the ripe old age of 14+ on the stuff, another dog to 10 when I lost him to DM, and my two current Kirschental dogs do quite well on it too.  The female in particular is off the wall all day long and never seems to lack energy; I figure she does about 50 100-yard wind sprints and 20-30 miles of trotting every day in the yard and is out all day regardless of the weather (the male is nowhere near as driven and has actually developed a resigned look on his face when he gets up to check out the latest thing she's raced off to investigate).

I don't think she'd be that interested in raw anyway unless it included some woodchuck.  So far she's killed and eaten two of them, along with a skunk - let's just say she doesn't lack ambition and sneers at chemical warfare defenses.  And the male is so laid back that last night I forgot to put some hamburger I'd taken out to thaw back in the fridge before I went out that he could have easily poached off the counter, yet there it was completely untouched when I got back.  So to hell with 'em - I say they can either hunt their own or STFU.

Donald, LOL at your last line. Maybe she's trying to tell you something w/her hunting, though;-)

Hey, when she develops some opposable thumbs and an IQ higher than mine, then she can decide who gets the grass-fed beef and who sleeps in the bed.  Until then, life just ain't fair, I guess.  :)

Honestly, I have had great results on better quality, grain free kibble (TOTW here), but when I was showing and conditioning dog professionally I added raw organ meats, eggs, fruits and vegetables and all sorts of wonderful stuff to the dogs' diets, admittedly never knowing WTF I was doing to the nutritional balance or the caclium x phosphorous ration. The dogs looked great and won no matter what I threw at them, but they gobbled their rations up faster and pooped out a lot less when I added the organ meats and tripe for a substantial part of their rations a few times a week.

I personally feel more comfortable feeding a good kibble product than going it on my own with raw, guessing at whether what I feed really does make for a balanced diet, but if I cold afford it and had a freezer to store it in, I would feed Common Sense exclusively.
