personally, I think it is great that you don't blame the owners or the dog....Stuff happens sometimes...take care, of the wound, and then walk your dog.  Lida

Bummer about the bite.  Be sure to share a pic when the wound is in full bloom...it will be more impressive then.  Sending good thoughts and hugs your way and hoping for a speedy recovery!

Two moons,
First two posts were excellent.

OGBS,
My problem with the organization is their political activities, and their commercials by design.

Vixen,
Naw never mind.

$120.00 for antibiotics, priceless.

No pain meds !!!   Those bastards !

The bite sounded like a series on mistakes yes.
The breed is capable of crushing bones, this was as you said, not vicious.

I can see saving an animal but only on an individual basis, not the majority and not based on breed.
This one I would put down.

I would have hung around for the debate but thunderstorms shut me down.

I really hate ankle bitters.

Moons.

I agree, appearances can be deceiving...The bite doesn't LOOK all that bad, but we don't see the damage done BELOW the skin.

Antibiotics are good, take them the full course through, just to be on the safe side.

Did they advise you to clean it with anything? I know when my hand was tore up seperating a friend's two dogs, they told me to put NOTHING on it, only to clean it a few times a day with an antibacterial soap and to take whatever antibiotic they put me on at the time.

I too wish you a speedy recovery and hope it doesn't scar TOO badly, though ya never know

Bazza, tiny "nubs" of hair, I need to shave.  LOL

Put nothing on it, wash with soap and water, and loose, dry bandage, if any at all.

LOL, Thanks for the explanation, I'll try it out with the missus when she mentions my stuble on my chin.

Travels...I know how that feels. I had that same bite on my hand, all the way through. No tearing- just punctures. Only permanent damage is the tendons between my pinkie and ring finger are now all over between my ring finger and middle finger, so my last 2 fingers don't bend smoothly...they kind of snap, which is fun to gross people out with. Hurts like hell doesn't it??? I had to carry my hand up, higher than my heart for a WEEK or it would throb horribly and bleed like crazy. They don't bandage hands or stitch them if they can help it due to infection. I got antibiotics but didn't take them, of course. It was my own dog (total freak accident).

I am not sure I'd call your bite a fear bite-more like he did it instinctively- hey, you broke into his house!- but then realized maybe he shouldn't have done that....or whatever it is dogs think. Startled, probably...but not sure fear was the true motivator. If he's aggressive toward people regularly, then put him down. If it was only this incident, w/someone walking into his home, then why put him down???

This thread was only about Travels' bite...not about whether the dog needs to live or die or the HSUS and good GOD, it wasn't about no-kill policies in general. Let's wish her a speedy recovery and move on, shall we???
