I guess it depends on how you define "top of the sport", is it only those who place top 5 in the world championships ? There was a man who won the IPO-championships for rottweilers, two times even, he didn´t use electrics. If someone qualify for the IPO-worldchampionships but don´t necessarily win but do a pretty nice routine I guess that would be proof you can do pretty well without electrics in the protection work. I think, almost sure, most of the tophandlers I´m aware of in the swedish protectionprogram don´t use electrics, some national IPO-competitiors also don´t use them, that is, if they don´t lie and trains different when not at the club;)

You know when the people here do not follow the sport at all otherwise they would have busted out Yagus.

Even that's a myth Jeff. Yes Yagus has had some clicker training but he has also had some other "stuff"  I know because I asked his handler.

Maybe we should rephrase the original question, why do some handlers need electrics to varying degrees and some don´t, could  it be, lo and behold, that those who needs lesser corrections in training are more advanced in their trainingknowledge;)
That there are a pretty large differences between different cultures, and also personal beliefs when it comes to training dogs is pretty clear in different parts of Europe.

Oh, I sure as hell hope that you are not referring to the man I think you are!!!   I admit that I never actually saw him use electricity, but I sure as hell saw him do VERY DAMAGING AND INHUMANE things with a red cord around the rottie's neck.  Unless you think that cutting off the dog's blood supply to the brain, so that a big, adult male rottie falls unconscious to the ground is humane, you must not be referring to the same guy.    I have yet to see an e-collar render a dog unconscious, or physicallly affect its brain function, due to lack of blood and oxygen.

Chris, I should have put one of those "wink" emoticons there. I just find it amusing that people with no clue are here trying to bash something they have only read about.

I just come here to laugh for the most part, MAN these people are goofy. : )

The reason why is because some people want to get by with a 220pt score and others want to get 300pt.

AS for the Swiss and their training........

The Swiss dog that I have seen, just a few in person, but alot on video. It seems to me they breed dogs for bidibility and gobs of prey. So you have a high prey dog that wants to work for it's handler, you get a dog more likely to work with the least amount of compultion. In terms of Malinios I see a huge difference in Belgian bred Malinios and Swiss bred Malinios.

I saw some Swiss trainer once, I think it he was a Mondio trainer can't remember it was a long time ago, and the guy from Sweden did not use electric, talk bad about them but he laced the shit out of some dogs.

It is funny how people think of things. For me, I know one guy I would let lace my dogs, and it would only be once or twice for a desired result. Anyone else lace my dogs and they would get an ass whippin'

But e-collars are cruel

Lace ??? Thats a new one. WTF ?

by Get A Real Dog on 27 February 2009 - 04:02

Actually I ment to say strap, but he did lace the dogs too.

Strap--Correct the dog by smacking it accross the face with the leash.

Lace--Same thing but with the whip. Not popping the dog but actually whipping the dog accross the face with the whip.

And people worry about the e-collar. These people need to just go out and train to a higher level than sit.
