'And To the Republic for Richard Stands'

by 4pack on 06 January 2009 - 20:01
I always thought it was "for which it stands"

I'm certain she knows that girls, Mystere was trying to explain something to me, but because I'm a Brit... it's kind of lost on me. LOL

Okay, here goes....
When we begin school as little tots, they have us say the "Pledge of Allegiance" every morning. We faced the flag, put our little hands over our hearts and repeated what the teachers taught us by rot: " I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America. And to the republic, for which it stands, one nation, under God., indivisible, with liberty and justice for all...." Well, when you are only 4, 5 or 6 and you hear this, it sounds like you are supposed to say...." and to the republic, for Richard Stands." So, that is what we say, sometimes for many years. Some of us spent years wondering WHO Richard Stands was!! I don't even remember how old I was when I finally saw the Pledge written out and realized Richard Stands had nothing to do with it!!
We had trouble with the "indivisible" part, too. I said "invisible" for a long time. Needless to say, it leads to some very confused elementary school kids who are talking about this invisible thing under God (must be something to do with angels) and some guy named Richard Stands, who owns it.

Is it the American thing (some Americans) that they think that just because most people write here in English, or even reside in States at the time are native speakers? This is internet ladies and gents, and people from different countries and different backgrounds come together. You don't understand something ask politely don't be a d--k. As well you will find some people that are good at math, physics, or even art while other are better at English and expressing them self, no one is perfect. How about you get that in your thick skull first. BTW my grammar and spelling sucks big time J

by missbeeb on 06 January 2009 - 21:01
LOL, thanks for that!

BTW my grammar in my native language sucks and always sucked as well, I was like the worst speller ever, but I blew almost everyone out of water in Physics and Math, some people natural ability lie somewhere else, you think some of us would not want to be able to express them self better, clearer? Sure we would.

Mystere, I'm glad I was out or I would have fallen head first into that one.
Anyway, knowing that you finally got a laugh has given me a new leash on life.
