Hi Reason
Items for the BC Agenda had to be in last week as they need to be collated and sent out to the clubs in time for the clubs to meet and discuss the proposals before the meeting in November.
In the absence of your suggestions I had to take my suggestions to my club meeting at the start of last week to get them approved to be sent to the BC Secretary IN TIME to be added to the Agenda due to be circulated out to all the clubs later this week, which then gives the club committees approx one month to meet and discuss the proposals on the Agenda prior to their delegate attending the meeting.
But alas, do not despair because when your proposals are finalised you can always send them to the Secretary of the Club you are a member of and ask them if they would consider putting them forward onto the next BC Agenda. I presume you are at least a member of either BAGSD or the GSDL so you could send your completed proposals to the Secretary;s of either of them the Leagues is Carole Lister but not sure who is Gen Sec of BAGSD's now though Andrew Winfrow would know.
FYI - West Yks has submitted some proposals for a Two Tier registration system.
Best Regards
Sue

I think one problem we could have with the KC is that they want the government to introduce legislation on dog breeding, however I have a letter from the secretary of rural affairs etc., stating that they want dog breeders (I assume they also include the KC) to legislate themselves!
We need to get the KC to see this as the only logical way forward, keeping all registrations within the KC (I'm seeing lots of ads stating "not KC registered" as if its a good thing) but recognising those breeders who do so much more. Seeing as most health schemes are linked with the KC its not even something that has to involve extra paperwork - the computer should see "parent hip score below .... etc." and be able produce the upper tier paperwork.

I've had another letter from my MP. He has sent me a copy of a letter he received from the KC (Caroline Hallett) regarding the 2 tier reg system.
Thank you for your letter of 18 September 2008 regarding proposals on a two tier registration system.
The Kennel Club has for some time been working on many initiatives to ensure breed health and welfare, which are outlined on our website. There are some breeds about which there are particular concerns and we have an ongoing programme of meetings with representatives for these breeds to establish the best way forward on health and welfare issues.
The proposals forwarded will of course be referred to the relevant committee for consideration in due course.
I also had a letter from DEFRA asking me to forward the proposal to them as Lord Rooker was unable to deal with all of his emails (why do they have these positions?) ... so I will do that.
I'm quite chuffed with my MP but I think the KC are fobbing us off as expected, perhaps we need a little more ado, just to keep them on their toes?

Well the thought of having to work dogs has KILLED the entusiasm on this thread wonder if its just a British thing
by beepy on 20 October 2008 - 09:10
Reason - I dont think its killed the enthusiasm - I imagine every one is waiting to hear something back from either the KC or BC before pouring more energy into it.
I've also been tied up with non dog things which has left me with little time at the moment.

reason: Don't lose heart. The working of dogs is a long term adjustment for many. I have always really enjoyed watching GSD working, at all levels, including on my many visits to the BSP. However I knew, over 30 years ago, I did not enjoy training dogs in obedience. I enjoyed watching Rhoda do it, and went with her to training every week. I simply did not enjoy doing the training myself.
Some 10 years ago I was advocating Schutzhund training for show dogs, and I was openly criticised for encouraging our dogs to do bitework, and told that obedience training would render a show dog useless in the ring, making it walk to heel all the time. These people totally ignored what was in their face, every year, when they visited the German Sieger Show, seeing all those exhibits, mind you many breeders and exhibitors still do ignore much of what they see, come to think about it. It's the main reason too much mediocrity exists in the UK today amongst GSD exhibits.
Persist with your ideas and proposals, our breed needs them. Maybe one day our Breed Club Committees through our GSD Breed Council, will find the courage of their convictions and actually process some of them, even one of them through to a successful conclusion. I have to go now and watch that pig flying over Malvern Hills!

If you look at the hits for this thread and add then to part one you will see it is i=one of the most popular ever
BUT I HAVE KILLED IT BY SUGGESTING THAT ALL THE BREED people get of there butts and put some work into their dogs.
I am sure in response to this you will see them defend themselves by saying to much to soon
RUBBISH if you cant teach a well adjusted GSD of 18 months old to take an aptitude test in 12 weeks time it IS NOT A SUITABLE TO BREED FROM G S D
Thats my final comment on the subject YOU ARE BEYOND HOPE and together you will take the breed further down the slippery slope

I've sent you a PM Reason.
You're right and your wrong! It's knowledge too, that makes us say too much too soon... but it's NOT over Reason, some progress has been made and I remain (stupidly?) hopeful.

I'm curious as to why you'd have "play with tug toy or ball with a stranger" as a REQUIREMENT instead of the stranger work as currently done in the BH.
I don't think the general public wants a GSD looking at them as a playmate instead of the calm/friendly or calm/neutral behavior currently asked for in the BH. And I don't particularly want my dog to run play tug with any old stranger who waves a ball in front of him. I expect my dogs to pretty much ignore non-threatening strangers, not to play with them. I think this is more respectful to my dogs, and also important, more respectful to the public, to prove that this large dog is calm and friendly.
