I'm so happy to hear Xena is doing well. These things are nerve killers. I know the price sounds like alot to you, but to me it sounds fair. I had a situation once and the vets were ,,,for lack of a better word,,,,rapists, and charged thousands and thousands when really it didn't need to be so high. They were just banditos and I was cornered. Long story that I don't want to discuss but the important thing is Xena is doing good, your vet sounds like he/she took good care of both of you and your girl is home with you and her babies.

I am not sure if I should allow Xena in with the pups. She is doing great, only lost 5 lbs, ( all the way down to 87 lbs lol)My main concern is that since Xena was at the vets, I am sure she has been exposed to a myrid of illnesses, She is fully vaccinated, but do I dare take the chance with the pups? She is about to drive me crazy already, howling and screaming... digging at the doors etc. The pups are no help, they heard her when I brought them home and all of them started whining and screaming.

Advice? Should I follow my gut instinct and keep them seperated? OMG I can imagine what my neighbor is going to say if she howls all night lol

Honestly, I would ask your vet.  I know where I work, we would be very forthcoming about if we had any really sick animals.   It's a tough call, they need their mom to a degree, but you are right, you do not know what she could have been exposed to.

I am not a vet so I can not give advice but if she was my bitch I would let them nurse. The reason being that if the 'toxins' are outa momma how can she pass them to the babies? Exposure to diseases does not = sick. Like I said ,if she was mine ,I would let them nurse. IMO it would be good for all.

My concern is the transmission of Parvo. Our area has more than its fair share of parvo cases. The local shelter has a continious outbreak/fight with parvo and this vet happens to be one of the preffered vet for the shelter clientel. I do know she was kept in an upper kennel and this particular vet is extremely fanatical about disinfecting. There were only 2 other dogs hospitalized and they were in bottom kennels, 1 was having heartworm treatments the other was recovering from a car accident.

Oh yea, I had her tested for heartworms and she came back positive :( She will be on revolution for the next 3-6 months then over to Heartguard ( or similar product). He said it was a very light load, barely registering so thats a good thing.

Sure would be niceto not have to haul pups but I dont want to take a chance with their health. I may take them in to the shop today and then call and talk with my vet.

1 thing for sure, these pups are going to be "Bomb Proof"!! Going to the shop they get sudden noises all the time, Like High velocity dryeres being turned on, vacuums going, I was vacuuming up the hair around their pen at the shop and they came towards the noise to see what was up lol They had previously been exposed to the cvacuum and steam cleaner altho it was thru the bathroom door. They have had a light bath already, they were so covered in mush they stunk and had to have a bath. For the nmost part the accepted the water and blow drying, only a couple really squealed when they got bathed. The business that shares a building with me is a Rock and Sod landscaping business, My daughter had the bright idea to get a few squares of sod and put then in trays in the pen, The pups LOVED i!! They made 1 their napping place the other was their bathroom lol. Should haveseen em, first experience with grass and dirt, it was so cute, they tugged and chewed and sniffed and then laid right down and thats where they stayed lol

Gotta get a shower and get ready to run for the day, have a great day guys!

Id be worried also,,,as Parvo is highly airborned, but if you bathe her and wipe her off with whatever you vet might suggest,,,she ought to be ok...  I make people put bags on their feet and not drive cars on my property as they have been to Canton or where high Parvo risks exist....

Your pups have a built in immunity so it ought to hold till they get their shots , and in your case   no later than 8 weeks.....]

someone came to bat against all of our post here, dont remember,,,A Jade person I think, about giving shots too early a=nd too many....

I would like to warn this person   that advising someone not to give shots at a certain age is bad business,,,like sticking you head where it doesnt belong......any good vet will tell you,,,,,,,,yes too many too young can be bad......but in cases like Shandra is going thru......may warrant her giving her shots at  6 -7 weeks old to insure that a healthy pup, indeed , stays healthy....

Not every case is cut and dry in dog world......I have given thousands of shots at 6 weeks old and no sick or problems ever.....but I would never advise someone else in a case not my business, and under certain other circumstances , not to give a shot.......I wouldnt want to have to pay for a law suit against me  , if her pups die....of parvo  ......or Distemper...because she followed my advice.

No i dont give Rabies till way over 6 mos...but mine arent out in the public anylonger...and I see no rabid cases in my territory....further in town yes,,,Rabies in Smith County over three this year.......shoot those pups at 5 to 6 mos old if you live in Tyler proper....

In every decision we make , their are risks....Parvo scares me,,,and Ive had some stories that I will never do again, like going accross town to help a man I didnt know , who called , and told me his pups wouldnt eat and were acting funny....he heard I am a pro so he ask my help...when got there,,didnt dawn on me....parvo.....after Iwalked on his property, looked at pups ,handed him some meds, for diahrea and told him to get the to vet and start electrolytes with liquids into them now....four died in the next 24 hours  he pulled three thru it at the vets...I prayed for days I didnt carry it home   I shed my clothes at the gate, disenfected myself the best I could and left my truck outside the gate till I could disenfect it with a chlorox bath......I never , ever have had parvo or distemper on any pup , and dont want it...but I worried for three weeks......on that episode.....I learned to say  no

Speaking of parvo, live n' learn.

A while back,  almost 20 yrs ago, I was given a German Shorthaired pointer, for free, she was from top lines,
Seerakraut lines, only--she was under the age of two and had gotten pregnant with the guys black lab.
She ended up having a nice healthy litter of pups.

After her pups all went to new homes, I took her to the vet to be vacinated, the man that had owned her had not given
her any booster shots, or health check-ups, when we got to the vets. she was in good shape, the vet. was an elderly
man, almost ready for retirement, nice, nice man.   He had this little mixed breed dog on a table, with IV's in, I knew the girl
that owned the dog, it just ran around the neighborhood loose & she thought it had food poisoning.  The vet went from putting his hands
on that little dog, to touching my dog.  No gloves or anything, those were the good o'l days, anyway, my dog was dead within 2 weeks.

If I had know more about parvo, I wonder if I could have saved her?  She was lethargic and she was having watery stools, I was
thinking she maybe missed all her puppies, and the timing couldn't have been worst, I was having a family reunion and putting
her in another room, If I had known, she would have been rushed to the vets and put on IV's, the little dog ended up recovering,

I think back then parvo was just becoming known to people.
