Why do you suppose people are living in the now?
If you look around you'll see that the whole world is unhappy in the now.
I believe these things run in cycles and we are past the peak heading down now.
I can certainly say that this applies in the West, but I'm a little hesitant assume the same of other societies with vastly different issues. I think that where that's concerned however, those other societies lack the power, influence, and voice to be "relevant" on the world stage. For the rest of us, I believe that human beings do not handle prosperity well for one thing. Almost like you need some kind of real and organic frame of reference for what happiness really is about. If you think about it in terms of human evolution, society has outpaced evolution so quickly that our surroundings are no longer conducive to our make-up. This seems to be evident (to me anyway), in the amount of sickness and disease, as well as the MILLIONS of people who now rely on antidepressant medication just to "get through" life. Rather than to view this as a disorder in the person for instance, I tend to view it as a disorder of society and the environment.

There's something to think about,

In someways most certainly, and in other ways not by a long shot...
Story of our lives;

that feeds the need to improve or to b*** about it and do absolutely nothing...just depends in what direction you would direct your nature...

And yes Carlin, it is the same for the rest of the world, it's just as fucked up there as it is here, but some of them still know where to look.
Happiness is measured in moments and they can pass without you even noticing them.
Take a break, step back, and maybe it will come to you what your missing.
Happiness is up to you.
