I agree with Q man, the age of the dog does dictate the training method. Nan's dog is young and I think he would respond to a retraining program. It probably would have been better to not have had to deal with it in the first place, but what's done is done, a lesson has been learned.

LOL, Which is why your dogs are destined to repeat their mistakes. Redo what you've already redone and hope for differenet results.
Definition of insanity.
But hey! My dogs recall every time every where.
btw, nice dodge of not answering the question. Hate to have to admit that you fit what you were complaining about.

Blitzen, I am very seriously curious, why do you think that an E collar is more traumatic then a prong/choker correction? Do you know how E collars work, I mean the principle behind them? An E collar is not the "big stick" nor something that should be saved as a "last result" because by then, 90% of people will have screwed up the dog to start with. Ehh, again, the problem is what I mentioned in my last post, people worry too much about corrections, thats why dogs get away with what they do. take care and have a great 4th of July.

HD, I don't use a prong to OB train. I use a buckle collar or a fursaver on a dead link.. Can't use prongs at AKC shows so I never use one to train. I never even saw a prong collar until I got my second GSD.
I've had both strapped to my leg. The ecollar hurt more than the prong. The prong was fitted correctly so the correction was limited to the girth of my leg, does that make sense? Anyway all I felt with the prong was an even pressure of the prongs where they touched my leg. I suspect if a prong were adjusted so that it didn't limit the choke, it would hurt a lot. That's not the way it's supposed to be fittted, is it? The ecollar hurt even on a lower setting. That's why I think it's more traumatic for the dog. I'm not opposed at all to using them for the right reason. I wouldn't use it on Nan's dog. Happy 4th to you too.
I like you, too, bz. You must have been the class bully.

Great ideas and responses from everyone very valid training techniques. All should work on some dogs where may not work on others. For whatever reason this guy has been trained and has made some mistakes along the way. Part of his problem is his age as I am still trying to keep it fun for him and I definitely want the willingness to want to do the work, any time any place whenever he is asked. Maybe that has given him the opportunity to not take it as serious as it is.?? And I know without seeing the dog work it is really hard to advise and correct problem. BUT we will try all methods suggested and I will get back to forum as to what worked for him best.
Thank you all sooooooo much for new to me; techniques. Really appreciate. Nan

Hired dog.
Blitzen has no idea how ecollars work or how to set the level of stimuli..
Therefore it is evil because he doesn't understand them. His statement about only using a flat collar or dead ring fur saver to train with says all you will ever need to know about his training.
Which is why he has to resort to name calling instead of answering his own self inflicted question. HE does everything the SAME way with EVERY dog and says that it ALWAYS works.
Let the OP decide which advice to follow. Enough said here to illustrate who understands what.

Its Ok Blitzen...
Its just that BZ and HD are making more sence here and they do speak out of experience... Im not a trainer and am sure you train great too. We like reading you posts but please dont get stuck on such issues and move on. Obviously Nans will decide how to proceed and this road to learning never ends.
Cheer Up Blitzen .. Its a Long Weekend - Lets Make it Worth.
Happy Training
