What are you saying? My father is a liar? He has been traveling to China for 30 years.

I grew up hearing the thing about 'polite burping', but it never
featured China - I was always given to understand it was a
thing from the MIDDLE East ?

Joanro, I can't.  I don't recall anything THAT specific. (Actually
'lethal'  from any one US company).  But in generalising,  ALL
bad practices and adulterations of foodstuffs, human and animal,
you have to admit this has gone on since pre-history, and is hardly
confined to China;   nor is it always common to ALL modern-day
Chinese firms, I'm sure.

by joanro on 24 October 2013 - 15:10

Hundmutter, look it up...the melamine thing and the contaminated jerky. What happened in pre-history is impossible to say what was done with fresh killed deer or moose meat...it was pre-history. But I bet the people didn't purposely "adulterate" the food they worked so hard to get and likely relied on for sustenance......that seems to be a modern problem in an attempt to preserve food for transport to all corners of the earth and to grow more, faster for too many humans to be fed in a natural manner. Anyway, we are talking specifically about the jerky which is manufactured and shipped from China which is making dogs sick and causing the death of many dogs in US.
If there is a problem with a product manufactured in the US, it will be dealt with appropriately to prevent dogs from getting sick.

by beetree on 24 October 2013 - 17:10

Actually not, specifically China, that is the point.

by joanro on 24 October 2013 - 18:10

Say what, Bee? Yes, specifically, China.

by beetree on 24 October 2013 - 18:10

No, Joan, the outbreak can not be pinpointed to one place, such as China, that is why it is being called, " 'mysterious outbreak', FDA says" .

You— I understand are talking specifically about China. Mexico is also suspect. Other countries could be as well. The problem is, since the jerky product is considered as being a "treat" there isn't the testing a "food" would have. That is what I understood, and that is why there is this broad based caution. FDA has not pinpointed the cause of the sickness, additive or otherwise.

All you have done is brought up past ills, as an example of past abuses proven to have been attributed to China.

Joan, people have been adulterating foods to get more profit
out of them for centuries. IE  For as long as food has been bartered
or sold from one person to another, as soon as there is any excess
above the growers' own subsistence, some sellers have cheated.  That's
how we got a lot of the consumer law, on weights and measures etc.
'Cos of what was put into flour as a make-weight, for instance.
Can't believe US is totally devoid of those.

by joanro on 24 October 2013 - 19:10

Ok, Bee. But you are bringing up Chineese culture for what?

Hundmutter, you can't believe the US is devoid of adding non-food to flour to make it heavier?

You also mentioned I have to admit that food has been adulterated since prehistory. How do you know food was adulterated during pre- history? And besides, if it has been, does that make it ok to poison dogs?

Hundmutter

by Hundmutter on 24 October 2013 - 19:10

'Since' pre-history becomes 'history' Tongue Smile  This
stuff is well-documented !  It does not make it
ok, to poison dogs or people, OR just to fool
them into eating rubbish instead of what they
think they are getting.  My 'take' on what you
were saying is that absolutely every pet chew
that comes out of China is likely to ruin your
dogs digestion, if not kill them outright;  as if
nobody anywhere else put crap into dog stuff;
... and Bee is right, the jury is still out on these
600 dead dogs anyway.

PS And since we don't KNOW, how sure can you be
that some American suppliers are not 'doing the dirty'
themselves and just have to be caught yet ?

by beetree on 24 October 2013 - 19:10

Joan, it was part of the conversation drift in which you showed a distinct bias against all Chinese industry. I merely point out there are aspects in their food culture that you might want to educate yourself to dispel some of that knee jerk reaction.
