Welcome to the forum. There are alot of knowledgeable people here and sometimes we forget what its like to be a newbie.

I used to rescue Neapolitan Mastiffs and I can tell you when they are on the other end of the leash people DID take notice so I think perspective of who you have on the other end of the leash IS what deters people a good majority of the time.

My suggestion would be for you to get a teen. That way you can still have some of the puppy but also some of the dog so to speak. You could even consider a rescue. We have seen Sch III dogs in rescue so they are out there. Not sure where you live but you could contact some of them and see what rescues have come in.

Ive been shopping too for a dog and prices are just crazy. Honestly I would put out a request and see what you get. There have been some really nice "retired from breeding" dogs available for free or close to nothing posted lately.

Where ever you go, please make sure the breeder (if you go that route) has done hips/elbows. There is nothing sadder and more frustrating then training a dog then finding out hips are bad. Remember your best defense is a good offense. Train the dog to be a friend first then protector. I never think of dogs as a first line of defense but rather a deterent that would give me time to get away or fight.

Good luck!

Very well said Barb.

Friend first; protector last.   I have to remind myself of that every day with Cirberus.  She is the first dog I have ever truly considered for protection.  As I am a worrier, I am constantly 2nd guessing what I do with her to make sure I do not mess anything up.

Dang...all them cows and hay are making me drool!  backside of the cowboy ain't bad either, LOL.

I was recently researching those mini-baler machines, I would like to be able to grow my own hay on a small scale (well...need my own farm first, lol) so they I can have it the way I specifically want it.

My mom's new neighbors across the street from them raise black Maine-Anjou cattle, one of those breeder's breeder.  Looks like their main thing is shows and producing breeding stock for other breeders with real beef farms.   I really prefer the looks of red cattle over the solid blacks.   I'd die to have some scottish highlanders.

Barb, very cool that you rescued Neos, I co-owned a mahogany brindle male once, he was a great dog.
