In response to the waiting for food 30 minutes comments...I have not actually made him wait that long, I am saying that if I wanted to he would listen to me....also, the prong collar is fitted correctly, right behind his ears and up under his chin...the problem is he will let out a whelp when his drive isn't very high, but he will not whelp once the drive is completely engaged.  I contacted a local trainer and they recommend he get neutered, but I hate to do that this early...I was told to wait until 2 years...he's only 14 months...I was also told by a local trainer that this problem will most likely not be fixed since he shows no bite inhibition towards other dogs.

contact them.

we can give you pointers and such but the thing is internet training never works. As 99% of training is reading the dog. since we arent there we cant read the dog and or formulate a sufficient plan.

They have some very experienced people there that can help you.

dont neuter your dog til you speak with them or someone you feel has a clue.
9 times out of 10 i will call BS on that as i think its a cop out for insufficient training.
So when ever you get advice like that consult multiple people.

JRS1984,
If you contacted a trainer and they recommended neutering the dog, I'd find a different trainer.  You need to start some very serious obedience training with this dog now.  Your dog may never be friendly to other dogs and that is not a big deal.  I wouldn't expose the dog to other dogs.  There are many reasons for dogs to be dog aggressive and you may never change that.  But you can change how the dog behaves around other dogs.  You can teach the dog that dog aggression is not tolerated and not allowed.  You do not need to neuter the dog to do this.  It is really not difficult it just takes some hard work and dedication.

Good Lord. Are there any decent trainers left? Send me the dog. I'll return him better, testicles still in place. If you weren't so far away I'd be serious. This is ridiculous! A trainer saying neuter the dog?! WTF does bite inhabition w/other dogs have to do with anything? To say he may not be fixable???? This guy has no clue whatsoever. Can we make him like other dogs? Probably not. Who cares? You want control over the animal you own; not a different animal altogether.

Not paying attention to a correction when hell bent on misbehaving is common and typical. Up the correction level. No brainer. Adjust down accordingly when he's not "in drive."  This is all part of learning about/with your dog. You will learn to dole out proper corrections and he will learn that when you correct him, you mean it. You cannot nag him constantly with corrections, or you WILL make them mean nothing. One good correction beats 10 nagging ones all day long. A dog learns to tune those half-assed corrections out, meaning you have to be that much harder with the next ones, which isn't fair to the dog. So, concentrate on making "the punishment fit the crime" so to speak. Don't over-correct, but make sure when you incite a correction, that he knows it's a correction.

The fact that he yelps tells me he's not a terribly hard dog; this should makes things easier as a whole. I might skip the prong for DA, like Jim has said before. Not a slam on you, but it doesn't seem like you're experienced enough to  use it perfectly every single time, so try some kind of slip/choke. I don't use metal chokes ever but I will use a leather or nylon for this type of thing. I do use a prong for everything, but you do have to be very careful w/your timing when correcting for DA or you make it worse. Ideally, you want to correct when the idea pops into his head and his body posture and facial/ear expression indicate he's going to go for it...and get him to redirect his attention to you and what you are asking him to do, but that takes a lot of experience and time. Most people wait until the dog is hell bent on killing the other animal, then they yank hard enough to piss the dog off but not hard enough to make the dog stop dead in his tracks. You can see how this is totally counterproductive.

FWIW, I have seen more weird, aggressive behavior from neutered animals than I have ever seen w/intact ones. I don't ever alter unless for extreme medical reasons.
