Labradors do sometimes carry brindle, but this is very rare in the breed.  They are almost exclusively homozygous KK, so possible but very unlilely that a Lab x GSD would produce brindle pups.

He's a magnificent looking dog and beautiful colour!

Missed my point. We're likely looking for a dominant brindle trait here...something that was likely brindle himself probably sired Manny. I don't see Lab. Possible, but quite unlikely. I see something else- more houndish or pointerish traits. Really hard from just an occasional tiny picture.

Plott hounds are brindle and I've seen them with webbed feet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plott_Hound

Plott Hound sounds about right to me, too. They can sometimes be mistaken for labs or lab mixes, so I can see where someone would think their dog is a GSD x Lab ... but with the brindle color, I'd say more likely a GSD x Plott Hound. JMHO Cute pup, by the way :-)

Early in this thread, I see that Mystere joked about rare genes and referred to Neanderthal genes, suggesting they'd be as likely.  I hope most of you have seen the new genetic research that shows that 3% of the genetic material of people with European backgrounds (I have to assume Southern European, largely) have Neanderthal DNA.  So Cro Magnon did not fully eradicate Neanderthal in his genocidal expansion.  And brindle genes may still be around, too.
