jmopaso....I am in Central Ohio.....My next investment will be a trailer of our own. When I get one I might take you up on your offer...You are brave to ride a stallion....

clc29.....We just brought our gelding home this past summer. You are right, it has been wonderful to see him everyday...I love when he nickers to us when we bring his hay out....We will be getting sand for our arena area in the spring....He has been a very lazy boy lately......I will post a couple of pictures of my gelding, aka Black.....

Good for you Deanna.  Riding can be a very relaxing activity.  The lessons you've learned with Ruger can carry over to your horses........  And yes please do wear a helmet, I will wear a flack vest at times also.

Wow! Comparing this situation with the dogs in shelters issue due to non commitment....
You got some nice horses there and more power to you for keeping them with you and safe. More than most people will do. I see it every day. In the dogs and the horses.
As far as her getting in over her head...I remember the 20 year old kid that got her very first dog, a Border Collie and had not a clue as to what she was taking on. Many years later I have learned so much and am not in a million years the same owner I was back then. And yeah, to say I was in over my head for a while would be putting it nicely. Fortunately for me, she was a patient dog that never left my side all of her life. She was my constant companion.
And as much as I agree that the kids do learn commitment very early on....they are still kids who have a lot of growing up to do in different areas. Be it from school, college, dating, their first jobs and so on. Horses are not quite as easy to manage for a kid at that age (much more expensive and involved) and that is where having a responsible parent, that will make sure they are still in on the deal (the kids that is)  is a wonderful thing.
I tell all of my clients that are looking to purchase for young riders to make sure that they are going to end up with a lot of the horses care down the road. How much and how soon, well, that depends in my eyes a lot on the individual situation.
Good luck and again, thanks for being there for them.

Ruger 1,

The situation is a not so good one. Made alot of peopler speak! Appeared to speak before thinking. I'm always amazed how individuals are so quick to comment on anothers' (what should we call it???) plight? Not a misfortune in my eyes. I will always love all animals, especially horses. And to have them come back to me, it might be a financial burden to an extent but I would be happy to have them back. Check in your high school, community college, co-op, 4-h club. Even church and find some one who is unfortunate to not have horses. They, I am sure would love the oppuritunity!

Sure wish I could have my horse back! I hope you have a lot of fun with them. I started my granddaughter with riding lessons, she just loved it, & had a lot of talent, natural seat & hands. She advanced very quickly & was jumping & doing a little dressage. So when I asked her when she wanted to start this year, & she said "no thanks, how about karate?" I was heartbroken. My grandson was started on French horn when we started her riding, & he's still going strong with his horn, thank goodness. I'm so disappointed that Maddy is not as smitten as I was with horses, it's so sad how quickly they grow up these days. At least she loves her dog steadfastly. jackie harris

Kids! Teenage love is powerful. The big snow storm cancelled school, (today too!) and my teenage son thought, great! He can spend the day with his new girlfriend. Earlier he only moaned how much he hated the snow while his little brother suited up to go outside. I reminded my eldest son, that they cancelled school and his dad didn't go to work because no one is going anywhere unless we get dug out. I also told him I was not driving anywhere for any reason, so his only hope was his father, who wasn't going anywhere until the shoveling was done. You could see the lightbulb go off in his head. " I'll take a shower and get dressed and help dad.", is what he said.

It was classic teenage angst when later, he flopped on the couch, arm covering his eyes in despair, and he cried out, " Oh NO, I can't believe it! I did all that for nothing? Mom, Tammy got in trouble and now I can't go over! Argghhhh!"

alboe2009....Thanks for the post....There is unfortunately no shortage of broke horses to ride in our area...4H and the like have more horses then they know what to do with....Of course they are not show quality horses with nice breeding and good temperament.....But, you can ride them...

We are not wealthy people, and I have a small fortune invested in my horses. I have come to the conclusion that people to not appreciate what they don't work for.....I do not pass off my truck keys, my dog's leash, or my horse's reigns very easily.....I am sure folks understand that......

Kalibeck.....Thanks for sharing your experience...There is always Great grandchildren....

beetree.....Funny...
