Prager:
I like the scale of one to ten. I am of a mind that the scale can be sliding in some circumstances.
I also feel that both defense and prey can be raised/lowered based on training/experiences, within reason.
Prey drive can be diminished by poor/unfair training/handling, while uwanted defensiveness can be lowered (not eliminated) through consistent and clear handling.
The goal is for a handler/owner to look at their dog and their expectations of the dog and train accordingly to balance the wanted drives.

gsdshow,
Ashley Lane's dog...very nice Dutchie. The DS generally
run a little bigger than the Malinois..They come on to the field like
gang busters hit very hard. It is not unusual to see them knock the
decoy on their butts. I think you are in a French Ring group....very nice.!!
Les was a Manteca policeman when I was working out of the Stockton
area....very good person.

KC-- what you are saying is true and academically stated ... PREY is an Exhaustible behavior .. meaning needsto be present enough motivation and energy to maintain the behavior or else the behavior will extiguish . Defense by nature IS NOT extiguishable or exhaustive because it is an innate genetic mechanism that is based in self preservation , the ability not to be inured especially an injury that may involve death .. So in the animal world .. you could say if you extiguisedh defense .. then the animal is dead !! even a predatory animal[ canines] should have some defense .. or else .........
