Deanna .. all people have their gifts from GOD .. so does the GSD...IMO not all GSDs need to excel at protection .. for search and rescue we want the exact diamtrically opposed innate instincts compared to protection .. So the biggest mistake is not getting the correct matched  canine and then trying to make it what it is not. and .. life is not about ONE trait .. nor the all the differences of traits as much as how we use them all together .. that is a secret of dog training .. the most independent , possesive GSD can also be,  if handled correctly ,  the best sport dog too . yes-- and TRUE ...  to the person that wrote there are a variety of factors with pups,: handling , matutrity ,  includung training .. thumbs up !!. SO i leave this post with : Both Genetics 50% and environment 50 %, both  matter ....  equally so ................. just use .. COMMON SENSE
