Hmmm, nope, sorry, don't know what marinated cukes are... they kinda sound like pickles though, no?
I do like watermelon rind pickles. Yep, pickles made from watermelon rinds.
"Mmmmm Sun tea with fresh mint sprigs."
YES!!! Sun tea is great. And it's practically free, no electricity, isn't that grand? But the silly Aussies and Canucks thought it was yucky, just letting it sit out like that. LOL

We had those cukes every summer.....ummmmm- delish! Thanks, I'll try making them like that....I like them with the paper thin onions, a little black pepper on top! Dang! Gotta go make some right now......! Cukes turned on me when I was pregnant, thankfully that subsided! And no more worry of that!
And Steve, thanks for all the delightful memories! And I remember the honeycomb with chocolate, too......I am now on a quest to find some! Thanks very much! jackie harris

If ginger ale is supposed to be made with ginger, what is root beer made from?
by beetree on 08 May 2009 - 00:05
Sun tea is the best! I taught my British neighbor this trick and she was quite impressed. I can't stand any sugar in my tea, though... a squeeze of lemon is just fine.
I believe root beer is made from the root of the Sassafras tree.

Root beer is made from something nasty!

by beetree on 08 May 2009 - 19:05
Actually now it is, they banned using the original Sassafras root because of compounds in it related to the same chemical compound found in ecstasy or somesuch.

Some people will snort, shoot or smoke anything!

YOU DON'T SAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So when they told me that it was ok to drink root beer as a kid, even though it had the word "beer" in the name... they were wrong! That's too funny!

Root beer & birch beer come from the same source, originally birch tree roots, just made a little differently; sassafras was banned because the compounds that are derived from the bark that you make tea from can cause cancer of the liver. You can get both tea & soda, though it takes some looking. And I guess youy better have a tough liver! jh

Kalibeck, not quite true... the origin of birch beer is made from the bark of the birch tree. Root beer, from the roots of the Sassafras tree. I love saying that word! A very interesting tree, with leaves of varying numbers of lobes, quite unique, I think. Now I just checked to be sure, so I can add, Sarsparilla, is from an Australian vine...I think. . (I have Sassafras trees in my back yard.)
I love birch beer!
