wrong,

No breeder is gonna pick my pup.  for me..I will evaluate my pup on your premises with the rest that are available..YOu sit and watch...if I cant do a few tests on your pup,,,wont sell me a pup.   Temperament testing is old as the days of Noah and all  people who have any knowledge of gsd will test the pups available before they buy one.

..Just my opinion....

(stole that from Mahon_)

I never suggested I was going to test on these visits. I'm going to visit and spend as much time as I can with the SIre's and Dams, even if it means I have to do some chores... figure there's always dog poop to be picked up... :)

Found another test link.... http://www.eastgermanshepherd.com/wert.html

well yes luvmidog you are an experienced German shepherd person you know what you can handle in a German shepherd and know what your looking for in a pup .Skylimit does not know the temperaments of DDR dogs , the breeder should help to stare him in the right direction or he could bite off more then he can chew.

No one enters my property with out being sprayed with Odo B, SHOES , HANDS AND YOUR CAR REMAINS ON THE ROAD..

MAHON  does the same thing...we dont allow anyone in
with out knowing and asking where you came from. Most people do answer honestly and so they get sprayed and usually will not be handling any pups and never go to the kennel part of my property..They can come back tomorrow clean and ready to talk dog...Never had a case of parvo or distemper or any of such and will not start now...serious is serious and some may not like me for it but I stand firm and so does Mahon...we have had people balk or get sassy...sorry...not today..bye...

.If you dont get sprayed , you dont come in..period..

And testing a pup for temperament is a must..Luvmidog is not an experienced breeder or trainer..he has owned pets gsd for over 30 years..he knows how to buy a pup...he just is learning here about Schutz and training methods...he can and should test any pup before buying,,  I allow any buyer to test and if they dont know ,,I do it for them..and show them what testing does and how to evaluate what they see.,...

It is called :  teaching them about the gsd...so many people know nothing about what a gsd can turn out to be..

I wouldn't think of paying good money for a pup that someone else is going to pick for me. BS on that! The only person who can would be an experienced gsd person who KNOWS ME, know exactly what I want and what I want to see, what I am looking for, etc. in temperament testing, knows the "personality" traits I favor, what type of training methods I do and do not use (or want to use), etc. Oh, yes, and whose opinion I can stand by. IOWs, it would have to be someone who can virtually BE me doing the picking. :-) Any breeder who wants to pick for me, I'd just have to pass.

Mystere Why on earth would anyone have to help you pick a dog ?  You are way more skilled  and familiar then skylimit with GSDs and most other breeds as well. He would do well to listen to the breeder on this one . One more thing mystere you are also more familiar with bloodline traits and dispositions  within the bloodlines ..skylimit 1959 is not familiar with these things . It is his first GSD .

This is Luvmidog and this is how he chose  Dax 11 . a Korbelbach dog who I was keeping..I thought he knew how to train a dog...This dog was so sweet but is from a line that has to be trained from puppy to adult with a strong Pack Leader.

Luvmidog only let him be a house pet, do what he wanted..  THis is why Dax.   aka Laredo is on my front porch and will not be used for Schutzhund or any club activities...He never knew a firm hand till he came back home...He had to stay in a kennel for three days the first three days without being fed in order to get his attention and not mow me down, growl at me and think he was the boss..He tore up two kennels the first night back and  he drug luvmidog all over the property the night he left him...so  yes , a sweet kiss puppy may not be what you want..A ddr may be too much but a few tests and asking a few questions, and I thought Luvmidog knew he had a handful..He trains horses..I guess you train a horse different  but for sure a horse doesnt live in your house or sleep in your bed or sit on the couch with you to watch tv and run the house..

All in breeder relay..I guess I failed that one.

skylimit,
The one pup I purchased from overseas the breeder made my pick for me, I trusted him.   But he would probably be the only one I would have trusted.  Still I had my concerns.
My motto is trust no one.
The rest I chose and my tests are simple.  First I look at the litter and individual sizes, markings, body structure, movement, interaction between pups.  Then I look for the curious, outgoing, confidence, alertness.  Will one leave the litter and come to me?  Do any act shy or jumpy?  How does a pup act when I pick it up.  Does a strange noise get their attention.
You take your time and I use my intuition.  I'm looking for intelligence, personality, confidence, vigor and some drive.
Sometimes size or color enter into it, but I put it all together and in the end I pick with my heart.
It still boils down to what you are looking for, its gotta be more than just one or two things.
And while your looking at the pups you should be sizing up the breeder in your mind as well, the conditions of the kennel, what kind of care they are giving to their dogs.
There is no test I know of that will tell you all of this.   Its just you and how well you listen to that little voice in your head.
Talk to the breeder and get his ideas and opinion, but make your own choice, for the peace of mind if nothing else.

Moons.

I picked puppies for my dad's friends, neighbors and uncles since I was 10. This was litters of gsds, beagles, labs and hound that the AKC has yet to recognize. I knew what the dogs were supposed to do and was able to pick intuitively, although some of the things turned out to be part of "standard" temperament tests. I have always just been good at it. :-)
