Two Moons forgot (?) to tell us where he lives!  LOL.  Montana?  Idaho? South / North Dakota?  Great names, they conjure up all sorts of great things... in my mind.

My own opinion is that socialization reduces suspiciousness and raises the threshold for them to engage defensive drive. Having said that i socialize extensively up to 6 to 9 months because my working line dogs normally have more than enough defense to carry them through protection training anyway. Socialization makes them easier to have around in society.

If you have a low defense drive dog, oversocialization might just kill any hope of it becoming a protection dog. If you undersocialize a high defense dog then you have a dog that cannot run free in public and one you must always keep an eye on.

The amount of socialization is tailored to the individual dog and depends on the job your dog is going to do in future. To determine how much defense your pup has the best guide is the breeding and parents. Also consult an experienced trainer.
