Renofan2

Animules, 4 pack and Sueinnc, nice to know I am not alone in my poor reading abilities.  Guess I better return my diploma from graduate school too along with the dogs.  I never realized how disabled I was.  Good thing I have someone on this board to point this out for me.

Echomeadows - 40 million people in the US suffer from Anxiety disorders.  It is NOT typical for a person with this type of disorder to be overwelmed by taking care of a puppy.  Most anxioty disorders develop as a direct result of a tragic event in ones life and yes stress can aggrevate the symptoms.  Just maybe the pup was too much for this woman you are talking about, but I know many people can not handle a german shepherd puppy.  As we all know, this breed is not for everyone.  How can you make a statement - that this is typical for someone with this disorder to be overwelmed by a puppy.  To bad you cannot show compassion for people that have suffered with this type of disorder and have to resort to name calling, etc.

Tammy:

I am sorry if any of this has turned you away from this site.  Please feel free to pm me if you would like to discuss privately.  I truly believe that a dog or puppy  (gsd or other type) will help you immensely in managing your disorder.

Now gotta go hop back on my rocker!!!!!  Darn it, I keep falling off.

Cheryl

Renofan,  ummmmmm EXCUSE ME but that was NOT ME that was doing any name calling thankyou VERY freaking much !!!   Once again please learn to read...

Yes I do feel that "many" people with anxiety disorder can not handle the stresses of a puppy.... sorry if you "feel" that's wrong of me to say,  I don't say it with Pure onryness...  The OP was asking a question,  I gave the OP my honest opinion,  just as you have yours ?? or have you ??  oh ya wait you did but that came AFTER your bash fast against me.   You have a right to your feelings regarding the subject just as the next guy,  YOUR op is no MORE or LESS important or relevant than the next either....

And why is My recomendation to the OP of getting an older trained dog,  such HORRIFIC advice in your mind when several other posters gave the same advise ??????  I don't see you TWEEKING on them,  What the HELL gives Renofan,  you a friend of sueincc or something ??  don't answer we know the answer already.

4pack,  No good lord of course not,  no the poor thing called me in such a panic,  and she brought the pup back,  I expressed my dissapointment in the way of I felt awful and explained to her that I would have tried to help her find a fully trained adult dog had I known what was up....  I felt awful for her !!  She just could not handle all of the unknowns,  she refered to things like the OFA's at 2 yrs.  the vaccines,  OB classes,  this poor girls head was just spinning,  it was like she was stuck atop an ol record player and could not get to the off switch...

I do know that many people suffer anxiety,  I don't think that it is a "Bad" thing,  I think it's tough for them.... Think how tough they have to be to struggle through every single day.   Good Lord you have to be a pretty strong individual to get up each day and deal with it,  some don't,  some give up.   I gotta give credit to people who suffer disorders of ANY kind,  I think it takes one damn strong person to deal with the problems every day rather than giving up.

Renofan  ...READ Don's first post.... READ Nancy's POST with this quote in it... "someone who has neither the physical nor emotional attributes to deal with this kind of dog is like giving a gun to a 5 year old"  And YOU Renofan have the nuts to say I have no compassion ????.... and this one in her second post "It is not solving the fundamental problem which is the anxiety.  If you need a companion to give you 'confidence' then any big huggable dog should do that."   READ TIG's post......

READ these posts to/at the OP and then call me compassionless with regard to my suggestion in my original post.....  I should have clarified by "fully trained"  for this individual it would mean "companion trained",  full OB in place,  Housetraining, Excessive Social Skills, yada yada yada.....You get the point.   A dog that would make the OP's life LESS complicated,  and as stress free as possible....What a horrible thing for me to suggest !!  Shame on me.  Good lord what was I thinking ??

Echo alot of times it migt not be what you say necessarily but how you say it.  Sure people suggested a trained adult but no one quite said it as offensive as you...for example:

We had a buyer who FAILED to disclose she had Anxiety disorder

Anxiety + Puppy ='s COMPLETE DISASTER

You are steriotyping a large population who may have different degrees of the disorder, quite frankly I am offended by your ignorance as well.  In HER situation as she described with all her expectations and specific needs perhaps an adult is best, but it sounds like you would never even think of selling a pup to ANYONE with a disorder ...that is pure prejudice.

And your apology for the misunderstanding (or lack there of) is just completely crude.  Your nasty atttude is very ugly.

Also....I would characterize this as name calling:

LEARN TO READ BEFORE YOU GO OFF YOUR ROCKER

Regards,

Melanie

Echo, the concerns already discussed about presumptively disqualifying millions of Americans who suffer from some form of stress-related disorder from GSD puppy ownership alone should give any breeder pause.

Beyond that, however, are potential issues relating to the Americans With Disabilities Act, which specifically bars discrimination "on the basis of disability in the full and equal enjoyment of the goods, services, facilities, privileges, advantages, or accommodations of any place of public accommodation by any person who owns, leases (or leases to), or operates a place of public accommodation."  42 U.S.C. § 12182.

My take on the statute's definition of "public accomodation" under § 12181 is that a GSD breeder is no different than any other business offering goods for retail sale, and thus would be liable for any discrimination against persons with disabilities.

But don't take my word for it - I have provided the link below:

http://www.usdoj.gov/crt/ada/pubs/ada.htm#Anchor-Sec-30198

I would also suggest checking out your local state law on the subject, which may more offer even more protection to those with disabilities than does the federal law.

Amazing how many of us supposedly read it wrong but reached the same conclusion of what it said..................

I think it's funny that Echo judges someone who has a psycological disorder
