Yes, indeed! Thats a happy story. In your case however, you were dealing with I'm certain, an impressive, beautiful purebred male Akita. Its doubtful that he would have even been put to sleep at the pound. A dog like that would probably find a home just on looks alone.
I don't get purebred Akitas. I get the old, the sick, the ugly. I get injured mixes. Dogs hit by cars, other sad stories. The dogs I have won't be the ones people visiting the shelter, will want to bring home. I have been able to place ads and through the years have placed a few pups that I came accross. Other than that, we are pretty much their home for life.

VKF-I do apologize for not being clearer. I did not think you were bashing. You were very forthcoming and civil in your post. The bashing comment was not directed at you and I should have made it clear that it wasn't. The what would you have him do with these dogs was a generalized statement. Once again, I can see where you would read it that way as you post preceded mine. Sorry about that.
But, I do question the aplication of this statement to the present conversation: "The idea that you give a dog a 4 x6 foot Kennel to live it's life for 10 years w/ essentially no interaction with humans or other dogs is a "kindness" is a fallacy." I believe it was stated by Abhay that his dogs did get interaction and exercise on his property. I'm just having a lot of trouble figuring out the point of this thread? DoFear was referring to Abhays efforts to care for these animals and has to be obnoxious to boot. It was a useless and bitter thread to bait an equally obnoxious respons.
This post refers repeatedly to the amount of money it would take for this endevour but I don't remember Abhay ever stating what his financial situation is or how many companies contribute to the effort with money or supplies.
Animosity between people is bad enough. But directing it toward animals is off sides.
But, still waiting for an answer from anyone on what this guy should do with all of these dogs? PTS or just kicked out?

I've said my piece on this subject. I'm glad there are people who give of themselves for any animal. In that I see that I am a selfish person because I don't reach beyond my comfort level.
I'm glad this was kept mostly civil and that the bait was not taken. There's been enough taking and giving bait lately. I'm personally weary of it and intend to try to avoid taking that bait.

Abhay, Absolutely he would not have lasted one second in the pound before getting adopted. That was my initial concern to be quite honest. If I told the people at the pound the dog bit me they would have sent him to doggie heaven-period end of story. There would have been too many demands to place on a potential new owner in order for the dog to be properly placed and it be a safe environment for everyone. And because he was an Akita, purebred, absolutely just gorgeous, massive male I did not want him to go to a "drug dealer", a family with little kids who never owned a dog like this before and just bought him because of his beauty; he needed someone who could understand him and put him in his place. I was definately not that person- he was a handful for me. This was not a dog for a "beginner" who knew nothing about the breed itself. This was purely a situation that I acquired the dog as a gift from a boyfriend who had a love for Akita's and knew I'd just melt when I saw this little bear show up on my doorstep. But I had no experience with this caliber of dog and had no idea what I was in store for as he matured. That's when hell started breaking loose. lol The man from the Akita rescue was an angel to his breed- he knew what happens to those dogs when they end up in the pound or the wrong hands, so he does rescue IMO the way rescue for a specific breed should be done. Not many operate this way. And you know what he charges if you want one of his rescues?? $150.00 That's it. He takes care of neutering/spaying, shots, training and it's well over the cost of what he charges. I have much respect for those types of people doing rescue of any breed.
Honestly when we speak of "pets" and strictly just a "family pet" I had my best luck with the mutt from the pound rather than all the purebreds that I ever owned. Well before my GSD's that is. I think it's great if you can take in the pooches on death row and give them a place to call home. I could never do rescue or fostering cause I'd get attached to them all and never want to give them up.

I only wish I had the facilities and the time to take in more rescues. there are so many great working dogs in shelters just waiting for a "job." New England GSD rescue has a good program wherein they place apporopriate candidates in law enforcement homes. Someday hopefully I will be able to do the same.
