Horand carried for white (it came from his grandsire Greif) and since he was so heavily bred he was the cause of the white coat in the GSD. I dont know of too many white offspring but I know that Berneo v. Seewise, Greif II and Greifa. Berneo was the first SV registered white also if I recall...but dont quote me on that.
Another neat throwback would be the brindle dogs : CH Donna V Allergeiligentor (b. 1924) and her son Igor of Ceara (b. 1927)

It is interesting to hear the dogs you guys are coming up with. It is completely different from the working dogs that we love. For example Lord V Gleisdreick. Not one mention, but he was one of the best..........at least for me. Then there was Steffi Teikerhook a really great bitch that is in so many great working pedigrees. There are more, but I am rather out of it........to early for me. : )
It really is like a different set of breeds, even the thought process is different. I would never think to try and save the American bred GSD or the American showline. There are too many good dogs out there from lines that do not need to be fixed with weird backs and sickle hocks. LOL

Hey Cate,
Thanks for the info! I am trying to figure out what caused the white GSD to happen in the first place, genetically. I hope that makes sense.
I'll have to do some in-depth research and see what I find out. I don't breed white GSD's, nor would I start, but it would be nice to know the genetics behind the dogs so well that one is able to quote them. ;)
Thanks again,

lol - I own a White which is why I know...I started doing alot of research into color genetics because of her. They were acceptable in the standard in Germany up until the mid 30's and in the US until 1968 which is why you see them alot in some of the earlier books...I have a nifty article written by Anne Tracy that shows a white dog doing personal protection (I believe it was her and one of her dogs :p)
The German Shepherd Dog a Genetic History is a great book to look into if you are interested in starting out learning about GSD genetics. I started there myself and kind of branched out with other books and articles from there. There are also a bunch of neat genetics articles in the J.Heredity which is actualy where Willis gets alot of his stuff. There is another Geneticist, Dr. Schmutz (has a website) that has some interesting things too. But Willis by far is the one I have learned the most from in the last several months that I have been studying this.
