Schbabe

Skippy,
With all due respect, I disagree. If you read Linda Shaw's article on Pigmentation in GSD's (see Sunsilver's post above) you'll see that she makes a point to contrast dark sables, melanistic sables (black sables) and washed out sables, just as she does for Bi's and B&T's.
Here is a sable female...
And here is my "black sable" male...
Just a wee bit of difference, eh?
However, just for clarification, I don't use the term "black sable" as if I've somehow invented a new coat color. It's just a lot easier to type and pronounce: "Hi I'm Yvette and this is Chaco my mela... melo... mellanist... melonistick... melanistic sable GSD." I'll stick with black sable.

Skippy,
P.S. No need to yell at me with your "caps lock" key. I hear ya just fine from here. :)

Yvette,
You are correct.
I've been taught that way and there is a difference.
From Black Sable to Grey Sable to Beige Sable to Red Sable. All different variations if you want to call it that.

You can also get a red sable and a grey sable out of a sable and blk/red breeding along with the blk/red pups...

Owners/breeders of black sables.... I've heard one theory that says this colour is produced by the heterozygous genotype aw a ie. sable carrying recessive black. Any thoughts?
ps: I've found superscript!
