What makes the structure of a modern day showlines dog superior to that of a modern day working lines dog?
by Ibrahim on 11 January 2015 - 21:01
Both modern show and modern work don't represent correct structure, show dog of today, in general, has better type and better structure based on standard, modern work dog has flaws in temperament, modern show has flaws in temperament, modern work dog of today, in general, has stronger temperament than the show, no one is better than the other.

I had an American bull dog done alot of work training with him my first ppd with serious prey drive strong nerve had him out one day doing some training put more persure on him than i normally would after a while i noticed he started to fade min later he backed away never had faith in that dog again .that was ten years ago .I have a little more knowledge about WL i realised that dog was all ways in pray drive .pray drive is important part of the WL dog but without natural fight .That can not be trained YOU BETTER BE A GOOD FIGHTER BECAUSE SOME DAY YOU WILL HAVE TO PROTECT YOUR DOG I dont have half the book knowledge as most members but i have see this a good few times iv seen this in SL plenty of time and has seen it more in work line because the perssure is more likely to be more intense you can only hide behind drives for so long before your found out. As in humans a good fighter wont ever back away

You didn't answer my question.

Thank you Yogidog for that post

Well, answer is simple, read in the standard what a GSd should look like, you can easily see the show is much closer to it than the work.
Read what standard says about temperament, you can see the work is much closer to it than the show. That is what makes a show better in structure and work better in temperament.
But neither of them is perfect in either category

You still haven't answered my question.

Do you want a better reason than it is closer to standard than the work one? unless you consider the standard is useless or meningless or GSDs are to be bred to whatever criteria a breeder thinks is more fit for the breed.

@Aed: he gave the answer repeatedly throughout the thread: a) walter martin said so, b) a non-working standard-fitting (note: 67 cm = 65cm) "it" unable and unwilling to take the stick is "equivalent in faults", at the very least, to a working line gsd with excellent character and willing and wanting to take the stick but lacks in pigmentation, and finally c) walter martin said so.

bebo, I did not say anything is correct or incorrect based on what Walter Martin said or did, Since you mentioned Walter Martin, he was a brilliant breeder himself, it is of no use blaming him alone for the decline of the GSD, evidence says many of the dogs he produced were very good in structure as well as in temperament, some of his dogs are behind outstanding work dogs of today and the past, he knew how to produce a good GSD, what to breed and how, it is not his mistake that later on breeders didn't know how to breed and how to use linebreeding effectively, much of what you hear about him is personal opinions full of personal imagination and based on gossip at best, what we have in hand from people who knew him personally, knew his dogs personally is mostly positive. Is he to be blamed for people copying and pasting what he did but using the wrong dogs or wrong linebreeding and backmassing ?
