It is noticeable within our breed that we have people who avoid public communication about their strongly held views, particularly regarding the "prospects of our breed in the UK" - obviously concerned about "mixing it" in a public debate, and sticking to their normal "behind the hand" method of giving their opinions. Perhaps they think themselves "above this kind of debate" or even think they exercise more power and influence on such matters "in the GSD corridors of power", where there is little or no accountability to the rest of us.
We should ALL carefully think who "they" may be, so we can "isolate them" from our GSD decision making bodies.
The minority view should never prevail. "They" will no doubt be thinking WE, on this thread, represent the minority view.

So many people allegedly want change and yet contribute so little. What an apathetic lot we have in our ranks. Perhaps we are now the minority once again as it was in the beginning. Has the change that started all those years ago finally fizzled out? Many would think the will for change was never there. Just a lot of hot air in the beer tent at the end of the day.

David, How about an online petition? Could you do that on your site... and then present it to the powers that be?

Just imagine having only six regions in the country, each having two shows, six months apart, how easy would that become? and with the economic climate the way it is, one single entry fee to cover any amount of dogs, say up to five.
Classes will swell, therefore the atmosphere will be better, with the result that people will again look forward to shows.
The knock on effect will be immense, smiles back on peoples faces, courtesy will return, because if we do it properly, tantrums and backbiting will not be tolerated. Again it's only a thought, but if we wanted to we could make it work, and think about this, the KC might find this a very agreeable solution, in that they would only have to allocate 12 sets of CCs, no more cheap champions, the best truly will be the best.

Missbeeb,
Good Idea for a petition but online petitions are not very reliable. For a start in order for the vote to be meaningful it would be necessary to clarify the identity of every individual vote registered which in itself is almost impossible, on top of which you would need to ensure a ONE PERSON, ONE VOTE system but within a media where people can create an unlimited number of different email addresses using different pseudanyms it's an absolute 100% certainty that vote rigging would take place.
However, there is one way in which a general consensus could be done and that would be for David to send out email requests for individuals to send him an email with permission for him to add their name to the list , to update the list on his website and periodically to send the updated lists out to everybody (with instructions to forward on) so that people can check if their names are on it or not.
Of course David would be opening himself up to the Spam entities who would send him an email trying to say they were somebody else, there would of course be certain email addresses that he would be able to verify but possibly just as many that he would just have to take the word of, hence the need to periodically send the list out to everybody and perhaps once a month send it to Sheila Rankin for printing in the Mag with an Editorial byeline asking people to be vigilant and to contact the Mag editor Sheila Rankin and Mr David Payne immediately if their name appears on either list without their consent. David would then have to send out a renewed list having removed the name/s not having given permission along with an apology and the following month the same would have to be done in the BC Mag.
This is just an idea, a suggestion, I have not enlisted the services of either David Payne, his website nor the BC Mag and its editor Sheila Rankin. I was just trying to explain the possible type of extra checks that would need to be put inplace in order to even try to assertain a broader census of opinion. Obviously it goes without saying that the best way would be to send an official voting slip to the postal address of every real Breed enthusiast be it Breeder, Exhibitor or Judge but this would also be an impossiblity for anyone other than the KC to do for the Data Protection Act would prevent the KC from releasing the names and addresses required to take such an indepth Ballot and the Administration costs of printing, postage and securing the services of an Independant Ballot Counting Agency would be astronomical and without doubt not a cost the KC would be remotely prepared to stand.
And thereby goes one of our major stumbling blocks, one which I am sure Mo Lakin will already have recieved from one of the other people she requested considered views from. However, like anything else in life, if one throws enough thought, time and money into it, the almost impossible can almost always be made possible...just like that good old but very true saying "Where there's a Will, there's a Way".

missbeeb; I have thought about so much during recent years. How can we stem the decline in Show entries? How can we improve the health and welfare of our wonderful breed? How can we make the Breed Council much more effective? How can we bring our GSD Clubs towards thinking about The GSD in Great Britain, rather than "OUR GSD CLUB CC STATUS"? How can we remove the very serious UNDERMINING of our GSD by the Alsatianists? How can we greatly improve our breeds image amongst fellow Pedigree Dog exhibitors? How can we identify the best prices at Vets on a National Basis for our Health Screening Tests, and other regular and routine Veterinary Services that our breeders use? How can we tackle the very serious problem of Epilepsy within our breed and other breed's? How can we adopt a British System similar to the SV system, but even BETTER, because the SV system is far from perfect? How can we develop a National GSD Body which will be able to steer our breed through the numerous challenges that our breed faces within the UK? These are just some of the things I think about.
I am constantly asked why don't I join a committee and work more directly for the GSD. The answer is simple, my career entailed working constantly on committee's, and I had 25 years of it, with rather strict rules. I find the casual approach and conduct of GSD Club committee's offensive, mediocre and intolerable, I also find collective responsibility is too much of a controlling factor.
I initially set up my website in 1997, with the aim of developing a GSD website which would represent my VIDEX Kennel, but also be of help to our breed, and maybe consequentially help other breeds. I continue to strive towards that goal.
I am giving some thought to offering GSD Breeders/Exhibitors with a Kennel Club Affix, the opportunity to inform me by email, if they would agree with the Kennel Club separating the GSD and the Alsatian into TWO separate breeds? Their answers to the question could be published on my website on a dedicated page. The Kennel Club have ALL the experience necessary to discuss, implement and complete such a separation to the satisfaction of the GSD and Alsatian fraternities, of that I have NO doubt.
